we can't go for walks anymore!!! i live in a medium sized neighbourhood and when we go for a walk, we only have two choices, left or right and end up going in a large loop to get back home. If we go left, we encounter a large german shepherd who is never on a leash.. he wanders his yard, so i HATE going that way, also when we go left you never know if people are going to have their dogs out... there are a few labs and huskeys that just seem to wander around. and better yet if we go right.. there is a (my guess) shar-pei/pit pull cross that is in a fenced in back yard and he is always back there. when we (or anyone else) walks by he starts to bark and jumps up onto the fence. Well they have only been living there 2 months tops, and now the fence is starting to bend outwards and it is only a matter of time before he breaks the thing. It has been rather hot out lately so Lay and i dont' get to go outside much but like at this time of night (7 pm) i'd LOVE to take her for a walk but i'm honest to god scared for both of us to walk anymore... my mom told me to not go anymore unless she and my father were with me... i'm thinking of getting pepper spray to carry with me, because other wise i'd pick Layla up and i'd end up getting mauled. i am frusterted and VERY upset that people are not aware of the distress their dog causes. THis german shepherd could be a sweetheart but id ont' know that and i'm not taking my chances *sigh* just needed to vet.. maybe come winter things will change... |
I have the same problem in my neighborhood and I take pepper spray and sometimes a bat when we go out for walks |

I have the same problem here. The people behind us have a Mastiff who's old but can sure bark loud and has teeth!!! He's usually walking around the block by himself. There was a Husky mix a couple of houses away who was loose alot and would come over to our gate and "attack" the gate when he saw my dogs. He was loose a couple of months ago and killed a neighbor's poodle. Chuck will take them for a walk but I won't go alone. I will take Sunnie in the stroller when my granddaughter is here, she likes to go. Usually when I want to walk them I take them to the beach when I can see that we're alone I get them out of the car. |
You and Layla can come here and we can all go for walks :) I'm sorry it's like that for you. I bet you could get some pepper spray at a gun/hunting shop (do they have those in Canada?) that's where I got mine in Alaska. |
I googled it on the net and found places that sell it. I think you can also get it on Ebay |
OMG Jeanie!! did you call the humane society?? that is horrible!! |

why don't you go for a visit without your dog and see how the shepherd is like. like you say, it could be a sweetheart. rather than cut your walks out and be in fear all the time you should go and find out. the other one that is trying to break the fence down, I would not like that either. I think I might even pay a visit to them too and see if there are any times that they do not have it in the yard and let them know your fears and concerns. worth a try any way. |
I walk my neighborhood alot, BUT, I also load them in the car and head to one of the many parks to walk several times each week. If you aren't comfortable in your neighborhood, is this an option??? |

I didn't, we did not find out until a couple of weeks after it happened. The owner of the Husky called the police to report it and Animal Control came and got her dog and put it down. They tried to save the poodle but it did not make it. It was really sad. The husky belonged to her husband and he died suddenly last fall. She really could not handle the dog but kept him because he was her hubby's. I don't know what the law did as far as restitution and fines but I heard that it was just awful for everyone involved and was taken care of. |
No its not illegal to carry it it is sold for self defense |

That sucks! I'm lucky my neighborhood is rather ''small dog friendly'', there is a maltese across from me, a bichon on one side of me, a dog that looks like ''Eddie" from "Frasier" and I usually see atleast one other yorkie walking. It's really the ''big'' dogs that gets pointed out and somewhat talked about [in a negative way]. I'd def limit the furbaby to walks in an enclosed backyard or in the house if there are big dogs roaming around the neighborhood. :thumbdown |
