I have to agree with Surfie and Tiki .... Monday was not being insulting, she just was trying to find out why in the world would you post this thread to begin with, here on a Yorkie Lovers' board..... and Pat022351 had an inkling she was going to get some "flack" as she put it. Comparing toddlers and Yorkies is not the thing to do. Yorkies can not do much for themselves. I know some people I would never leave home alone and they are grown up .and yes, I would never leave a toddler alone. and I would not walk one on a leash either... but we try to train our Yorkies to be disciplined. Whatever! This is a mixed up thread. many opinions ... I doubt Monday meant to insult you personally.

| I also think that comparing toddlers to yorkies is just a weird analogy. Toddlers are children that cannot fend for themselves in any way, nor is it safe for them to. Yorkies, while they might get into mischief, can handle certain things on their own. I know that mine are a LOT of work, but I have multiple dogs one year of age or less. I made this commitment to working with them and am not working right now (but if I do work in the future it will be alternately scheduled with DH so that the babies are not left alone). I am postponing having children until they are all at least a few years of age, because I know that is what will be best for my personal situation. But that is just the thing, it's totally personal. Some yorkies can stay home a full work day without their owners.. the owners puppy proof the house.. and the yorkie is fine. You can't just leave your toddler alone in an xpen or room alone and expect it to be able to feed itself, relieve itself, ect. I think I know what you were getting at by starting this post, I just think it came across wrong. |

| Unfortunately - this type attack is the reason so many YTMembers wind up ending their yorkietalk membership , YorkieTalk has beome very cliquey (sp). there are a few members who seem to run the show. Time to let the new members have a save on the forum;;

| As much as we love our babies, we are not perfect. Unfortunately, bad things happen. That does not mean we are bad yorkie owners. I'm the mother of three children (all grown), and I supervised my children and taught them right from wrong. They still had accidents, like all children do. All I can do is supervise Jake and try to keep him as safe as possible. He's actually easy to supervise because he follows me everywhere I go. But, I am human and I make mistakes just like anyone else. As for dressing them up and taking pictures of them, there's nothing wrong with that. Obviously, if we're dressing them and taking pictures, we're spending time with them and supervising them during this time. They don't dress themselves and take their own pics. (Although Jake is a pro at taking his clothes OFF) |

I totally agree. Great post!! Some yorkies might be like having a toddler whereas other yorkies aren't, they are all different. For example, Destiny is a huge chewer. You have to constantly watch her because she will chew anything she can get a hold of so letting her roam the house without supervision is not an option. But then I have Trixie who is an angel, never chews on anything she isn't suppose, never gets into anything and can be trusted to be unsupervised at times when necessary. I do understand what you are saying though. I have seen too many people own yorkies or other breeds of dogs that shouldn't own them. They do not supervise them at all which could be hazardous. Take my ex step dad for instance. He has a German shepherd/husky mix. She is less then a year old. He does not supervise her at all. So when you walk into his house you will see paper shredded everywhere, plastic pieces are parts chewed on, just a total disaster zone. The dog is allowed to do whatever she pleases and is hardly ever supervised. Now that is a perfect example of someone who should not own a dog. Generally most puppies need to be supervised a lot, but once they know the rules are older and more mature they don't need it as much. Again not all dogs or yorkies require the same amount of supervision, but I do agree that if you are not willing to supervise at all what a dog is doing all day, you shouldn't have a dog. As for the yorkies or dogs that are lost or stolen, it is not the owners fault. I have seen only a few rare cases where the owner was to blame but that is really not the case. You can't prevent these things completely, you can to a certain point but that it is it, it is just an accident. You can't prevent accidents from happening that is why they are called accidents. I can see where you were going with the toddler thing, I just think people took it the wrong way or it came across the wrong way.
