Hot Pavement = Hot Paws?

..I walk on the street and Giz is on the grass beside me.

Besides the pavement being hot to their feet it is radiating a lot of heat upward and they are pretty close to the ground. They can get really hot and dehydrated fast. Be careful! I wouldn't walk them on hot days, especially on concrete or pavement. You don't want them to have heat stroke...

The funny thing is, whenever I take Pepper to the park, I end up walking on the grass, beside my dog walking on the pavement. For some reason, he likes walking on the pavement, and I end up pulling him back onto the grassy area. Go figure. I avoid long walks after 11 on hot days though.

You'd think they would blister like our feet do. I'll be interested in what people have found. Mine don't go on walks on the sidewalk in the neighborhood because of too many irresponsible owners with unleashed, aggressive dogs. Too many close calls, we don't chance it anymore, thankfully I have a large fenced in backyard so they can get plenty of exercise.

ur lucky. here in Puerto Rico they don't walk their dogs as much as we do in the US. My first 3rd week with Ryoko i had a close call too, too close . A German shepard had Ryoko in his mouth. Some quick thinking from my son saved Ryoko's life. the houses are so close together there is no running space for a pet.
when i say "walk" ryoko just perks up and runs by the door, since he loves walks so much my son and i keep a look out for danger and grab Ryoko before any threat is close enough to hurt him.

I never really thought about the heat and if it was too hot for him.... he doesn't seem to care i assume they can take it.. cause in PR its basically hot all the time

I noticed when I started walking Sophie I put her on the concrete and she ran to the grass.....and i said no time for a walk....she kept getting back in the grass......then I realized it was mid day and about 85 degrees....so I put my bare foot on the cement and it was too hot for me.....so we postponed our walk til later that evening! I think she was telling me, that is too hot for me mama!!!

Maxwell does the same thing. He rather walk on a gravel road than in the grass. I don't know if he's so low to the ground it tickles, or what.

My baby lets me know if his feet are hot...he wont walk..he runs and wont ever stand still.

Hey, we are almost neighbors!! Do you ever make it over to St. John?

I feel kind of guilty, sometimes I walk Chewy to work, other times I have him in a carrier. I never really thought of the sidewalk being too hot! In fact, I've been trying to walk him a little more, because I thought maybe he could use more exercise. Oh well, back to the carrier! I guess I'll have to walk him on the beach, the sand doesn't get too hot. Not a lot of grass here!

I have never been to St John but maybe I get there soon.

Yes. I'm in Arizona and they actually remind people via the news to be careful w/ our pets' paws.

ST John is my favorite. We did the Windjammer cruise one year and a sailboat rental with capt. other year. I can't imagine living there, how wonderful for you. We stayed in the tents at the park. I saw people going to work on the ferry. I'm green.

Just saw this post. I'm glad you like St. John! I've lived here for four years and I'm still amazed at the beauty. Hope you're able to visit again!!
