| Help on information I've been looking into getting a puppy- specifically a Yorkie. However, I have never had a "high maintenance" animal before, so I was wondering if you guys could explain a little bit more of what you mean by "high maintenance." I know they can develop things like PST/MVD when they're younger, can develop hip problems if breeding was poorly done, can be difficult to train, and that they need to be groomed. What else would you say adds to their high maintenance? (and I won't be on again until Tuesday- I promise I'll come back to this) |

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk. Here are a few things that come to mind but before I got a Yorkie, I didn't know most of this stuff and learned it not too long ago on YT. Yorkies should always wear a harness because collars can cause collapsed trachea. Some Yorkie puppies get hypoglycenia (especially when taken from mom to soon). A lot of Yorkies are VERY hard to housetrain. If Yorkie has free rein of the house you might end up ripping up all of your carpet. Most Yorkies hate being alone and may have a fit in their crate. Some Yorkies will bark all the time. It may not be a good idea to let a Yorkie outside alone because of the high theft rate and intolerance to extreme temperatures. If all of your Yorkies baby teeth don't fall out they should be pulled. I am sure there are lots of missed but I don't want to make it seem like Yorkies are all work. They are the best breed of dog ever and you will be rewarded for all of your effort with their love for you.

Also, their hair needs to be brushed everyday so they don't get matts. They don't eat a lot so you have to get a very good food so they get the nutrients & vitamins they need. A supplement like Missing Link can help keep them healthy. They don't like to be alone, so if you work full-time, you need to spend quality time with them, or get two yorkies so they can play when you're not there. I work full time and I try not to go out during the week so I can spend time with him, also spend all the time I can during the weekend. My mom picks him up a few times a week so he's not alone all day too.

YT 500 Club Member | I fell in love with them because I had always been a cat person, and I find them to be somewhat like a cat. They wonder what is in it for them before they will come to you. They have a mind of their own. Read through the posts, and you will find many issues. They can be temperamental. Yes, and they do bark. Some people have been good at training them to not bark, but we have not found a good method if she REALLY wants to bark and bark and bark. They also like to bark at big dogs; so it is a good idea to keep them safe when you are out because they can get hurt. Also, as someone else mentioned, they should not be left outdoors alone because they cannot only get stolen, but they can be prey for larger animals.

| Honestly, I don't find Tatum to be any more "high maintenance" than my toy poodle was. I have been very, very lucky with Tatum..... no health issues at all, very sturdy 5 pounder, very laid back dog. That is definitely not the case with all Yorkies. Yes, they need to be brushed more than some breeds. Having a toy poodle previously, I knew of the trachea and hypoglycemia issues. I think in some cases, the "high maintenance" is what you CHOOSE to put into it. Not all Yorkies have owners who dress them and pamper them to the spoiled-rotten stage. I happen to think Tatum is a very well socialized laid-back dog and I think it has a lot to do with how we've treated her. Not by pampering and making huge exceptions for her..... maybe that's how you get that "way high-maintenance" thing. Everyone has different views on how they want to treat their animals and nobody is wrong in their views. You just have to decide if you're going to raise a "drama queen" or a "well-loved and well-behaved dog" (and hope their personality agrees with your desires) . Hope that makes sense and doesn't ruffle any feathers. You go onto any breed's website and you will hear how that breed is "so more special than any other". That's how we here at YT feel about our Yorkies. Do your research but don't get blown away by some of the opinions.

| Good luck on your search for a new puppy. You have to have the right combs and brushes to keep their coat from getting tangled. They need to be brushed daily, I found that out the hard way. You have to keep a watchful eye over them when they are puppies unless you get an older yorkie. They are a wonderful breed, I will say that much.

| They're also prone to knee problems (luxating patella). You have to be careful with them since they are small (for example, if they're in your arms and they wiggle out and jump down, they could really hurt themselves). |

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | ok - other High Maintenance Tips you may NOT know already You'll find yourself racing home to be with your yorkie rather than have time to yourself....it's called "The Yorkie Guilt Syndrome". (you picture their little faces waiting hopefully for your return) You worry about them ALOT - and every little thing elicits this thought - "Maybe I should I call the vet ?" The Word NO usually means "Oh YES I Can and who's gonna Stop me" ? You'll find no matter what - their cute faces let them get away with anything and it's impossible to stay mad even for a whole minute. You may come home to a full roll of Toilet Papper plastered all over your living room and bust out laughing.....even the cleanup is fun cause you just knew they had a ball. |

| Our yorkies must be groomed regularly. If not they get knots ect in their hair. Gracie loves to be combed/brushed. I get the water squirt bottle out and the comb and she is all excited and ready to go. Gracie and Hallee both get professionally groomed every 4 weeks., 25.00 each. I like their hair a little shorter because have less to hardly no knots, tangles at all. Have to be careful they do not jump down from high places ect. Do not want them to break a leg ect. Like from the back of the couch or bed. Our house is pretty much yorkie proof. We constantly check the floor to be sure nothing has been dropped that our little vacuum's could possible get. We just have gotten used to double checking everything. You can not leave anything on the coffee tables or end tables because they are bound to get them. Our yorkies eat both dry and wet food. We have to cut the wet food up in little pieces so not to choke. They love to follow us around the house so you have to constantly be aware of them...trying not to step on them, sit on them ect. Our's are not yappers. They only bark if they hear an unfamiliar noise of if we have company. We have had one bought with hyp that scared us to death. With these little guys nothing is minor. Have to have constant eye regarding their health ect. They are really high maintenance, more than we anticpated. We would never give them up. Heather-Mamma to Gracie and Hallee |

| Oh, and you will find yourself buying rediculous amounts of doggy clothing. Doggy suitcases, doggy carriers, bows, special shampoos, conditioners, better food than you get for yourself. The list never ends... I guess it boils down to the fact that they OWN you! haha. You are a Yorkie slave. Oh one other thing. POTTY PADS! And cleaning up the floor. They like to chew as puppies, so you need something to deturr that as well. |

| That was very well said Vilette! I race home from work every night. "No, I cant' possibly work late, I have babies to get home to". I agree with everything she said. These babies wrap you around their little finger. Their little faces are soooo expressive. I swear I understand what he's thinking and he understands me. My worst high maintenance thing is that he cannot, at any time, be allowed outside of the fence or "off leash" without barriers because he is prone to take off after things. The terrier takes over and he turns into "Super Otis" hunter of all things. He is UNDISTRACTABLE when he takes off after something so he is high maintenance that way.

and I know what you mean about the off leash problem - anyone who has their yorkies trained to walk in free areas has done a good job - mine will take off if something catches their eye too which is why they're always on a harness when out.
