| PLEASE HELP.Umbilical hernia/low cost vet care I posted this here because I know more people look in this section.... Hello everyone I haven't posted in awhile. I have a question. My yorkie developed what the vet told me was an umbilical hernia. It was a small soft lump on her stomach. He said it wasn't that serious and it wasn't a big thing and I can elect to have it removed. So I left it alone and noticed about a month ago that lump is not soft anymore. It is now hard and protruding more out of her stomach than it was before. It doesn't seem to bother her but I'm worried because everything I have read about these hernias is that they are soft and when you touch them they go right back into the stomach. Hers used to do that but doesn't anymore. Anyone have this problem? Also, my second question is my vet quoted me for the surgery $350. I'm in a financial bind right now. Does anyone know of any low cost veterinary care in New York? I was going to try the ASPCA but I'm not sure if they are low cost or not. And I don't qualify for any programs that offer low cost or free care to low income families. PLEASE HELP! I want to get this thing removed ASAP. TIA!!! |

It's a Yorkie Thing Donating Member | Oh I'm hoping someone can help you. I'm in Kansas and I've known puppy who have had this done and it wasn't that much here. I understand your concern for your little one, but I also need to keep medical cost down. I love my vet. He has very little overhead cost. But I'm hoping by bumping up your thread it will help. Good luck.

| The Humane Society usually offers low vet care prices. You should call and ask. I do need to add that some vets (4 out of 10), IMO, at the humane society are not very knowledgable. Good luck on your baby. |

| Charlie is 10 and has a wee hernia which hasn't bothered him. I would follow the vet's advice and watch it. Why have surgery it is an elective decision? Good luck.

| I would definately take her in to the vet. If it is hard there is a chance the bowel is now protruding and it could cause the bowel to die (incarceration). Then you will really have a problem. Here is a site that will loan money for pet care at a lower rate http://www.carecredit.com/ . If you plan on spaying her you can have it fixed at the same time and save some money. But at least have it looked at...

| I think it's close to $150 or more to get your dog neutered here! I wish it was $10 dollars. |

| With Apologies I did not read your post carefully. It sounds like she should be taken to the vet for an exam. Protruding is not a good thing and as bella said it involves the intestines which can become twisted if not repaired. Good luck and it would be nice if we could just have pets and without medical expenses, but they go hand-in-hand.

I called my vet today about it being hard and he still did not seem concerned. He said it would depend on what is protruding and he said it is rare that the intestines come through but that I should just get it fixed anyway. I guess I am just going to have to use my credit card and charge it....More debt for me | |
