| To cage or not to I am away from my home about 3-5 hours Monday to Friday while I attend University. My mom is usually at work. So, we keep Vickie in a cage so she doesn't get hurt. Tomorrow, my summer classes are over and I'll be home most of the day for most of the week. Should I put Vickie in a the cage for an hour or so if I'm home so she stays used to it, or no? |

Bella Boo & Diggy Too! Donating GS Member | Can you confine her to 1 room? I do not cage mine but it depends if a cage is something you plan to use for the rest of her life, then yes, Id keep her used to it. But if it is a temporary thing just while she is a pup...then no I'd let her get used to having free roam slowly. Bella has run of the whole house she is 2 Diggy is only allowed on level 1 not upstairs or basement...(he's too clutsy for a full set of stairs yet, he's 16 weeks) SO I guess it depends on what you have planned for her future!?

| How old is Vickie? Can she hold it 3-5 hours? I crate mine when I am not at home, for about that length of time. They are fine. I think 3-5 hours for a dog who can hold it that long is great. Just make sure she is tired when you leave and take her for a walk when you get home!

I personally use wire crates with a thick pad and blanket and safe toys like Kongs. They just sleep when they are in there, so they don't really play. It depends on if you want her to learn to use pee-pads or only go outside. Mine go outside and I don't leave them longer than they can hold it, so there's no need for a pen.

| I used a crate for Joey until he was about 18 months whenever I left the house. I'm usually gone not more than about 4 hours. If your home from school I would continue to use the crate but maybe not for that long a period of time. This way when you go back to school it wouldn't be as traumatic for your pup.

| I crate all three of my dogs when I'm not at home. I don't want to risk them getting into something they aren't supposed to. I tried the whole gating thing, but I've come home too many times to chewed up walls, holes in sheet rock, etc. So, I choose to crate. For the week you aren't at school, maybe you can go out periodically for an hour or two each time and leave Vickie in her crate so she doesn't get used to being out. |
