Lots of people in here do use ex-pens (big wire pens with no top) and playpens. My concern with a playpen would be if you have a pup that likes to chew.

I personally use wire crates with a thick pad and blanket and safe toys like Kongs. They just sleep when they are in there, so they don't really play.

It depends on if you want her to learn to use pee-pads or only go outside. Mine go outside and I don't leave them longer than they can hold it, so there's no need for a pen.
