| Lyme Vaccine? Just wondering if anyone has given their baby the Lyme Disease Vaccination? Ticks are big in my area this year and I was wondering if I should give Lily the vaccination. I've heard good and bad things about it (bad reactions). Any opinions?

| Me! I give it to both of mine every year. If I remember correctly the first year it's two shots about 2 weeks apart and then one shot every year thereafter. No bad reactions here and I agree...the tick are so bad here in North Jersey that I'd feel uncomfortable not doing everything I can to protect them. We use Frontline Plus, yard is sprayed but we still get them occasionally. YUK! I've taken to brushing them out everytime we get home from a walk.

| I didn't do it. My vet offered it but she was not wery optimistic. I also heard about side effects in some dogs. I my opinion lyme descease is not something that is fatal and very comon so I would rather threat it if it happens then put my dog through so may vaccinations with unknown effect in a long term. I use regular topical tick repellent (drops) like K9 Advantix or Frontline. These are also not completely harmless for some dogs but it's less scary then if it's inside the body through injection. My dog seems ok so far. I think it's good to do topical test first on any dog before applying the whole doze. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I just did a TON of research on this vaccine bc we're traveling in July to Minnesota, where it is endemic. The efficacy of the Lyme vaccine is really poor - and it is one of the vaccines with the most reactions. I couldn't really find a single reputable opinion-leader online who thought this vaccine was really worth it. The published papers and the AAHA don't recommend it. I decided to go w/ Preventic after several recommendations and reveiws about the collar. Check it out here: http://www.allivet.com/Preventic-Tic...gs-p/25166.htm and: http://www.preventic.com/ What's nice about it is that the chemical isn't an insecticide. Rather, it is a neurotoxin to the tick.

| thanks for the responses. I have heard that it may not be that effective and some dogs have had bad reactions to it. I talked to two different vets. One recommended it, the other didn't. I don't want to give anything to Lily that might harm her. I'll keep researching

I think if you look a little you're going to find bad things said about the vaccine, the Preventic collar and even Frontline Plus. Try and pick the lesser of the evils and like I said be comfortable with whatever you chose. Good Luck....
