Default Sometimes I wonder...

Yesterday morning I was driving to Austin, TX for my final interview...and on the way there I saw 3 strays...just wondering on the highway. But here is the kicker...they had collars and some kind of tag.

What is with people these days...can they not take it to a shelter if they no longer want them? I was so upset...not just at them...but at myself...I wanted to pick them up, but I didn't. I'm still thinking about those dogs.

If they had tags on them - it sounds like they got loose...poor babies - they must be so scared and hopefully someone grabs then and tries to find their home before they get hit on the highway -

I remember driving one day and saw 3 bodies of large dogs - I was so upset I stopped and was getting ready to call the cops when they drove up - it was a DUMP ! they said all three were just killed and dropped off on the side of the road ! People SUCK....

You know, out in the country many people just let their dogs run loose. They will pack with other dogs and strays. This is very dangerous as they can attack livestock and such. Good luck with the interview!

I thought that too, but they were all separate, I didn't see them together...they were all very dirty...I don't know if they got out or they were just dropped off. One was a chow and the others were something else...I don't know...but they were mostly white, with patches of black.

I was just thinking how rarely I see a stray dog or one not a leash and with it's owner. I may be just spoiled because of where I live, but I hink it is probably more common in rural areas. I think in the city and the suburbs, the authorities keep it pretty much under control, but I may be wrong. I just may not be seeing it.

I live in the country and the amount of dogs running loose and dead on the side of the road is absolutely pitiful! We have a shelter and it doesn't cost anything to take them there but people just let them roam, lots of hunting dogs get lost and they leave them to find their way home. We are always having a stray wander into our yard, and have yet to find any owners of any of them! Had a beautiful rottie join us for awhile, very sweet and well behaved, you could tell he'd been loved and trained, tried for over a month to find his owners but no one would claim him. Took to the shelter for 30 days, still no luck. Happily, someone adopted him the very day he went up! If no one had, we would have went back and got him although I can't handle a dog that weighs more than I do!
Dogs deserve better treatment than that!

One of my coworkers son's found 7 large mixed breed puppies she tried to take them to a local shelter and they turned her away said they were to full....so she called 3 others and got the same answer....This just disgusts me i am so tired of all these animals being put to death because people dont value their pets.

OH yes it is so bad around here...in the country area. About a month ago my grandpa saw a yorkie wandering down the road all matted up...I wish i had been with him, I would have picked it up...not to mention he saw it in Amish country. He said he had wanted to pick it up but he was afraid someone would think he was stealing it..(he is very shy) and he thought his car was too recognizable....he drives a new Silver Dodge Magnum..and in the country there aren't a lot of them...but anways almost everytime i see him now he tells me how much he wishes he had picked that poor baby up.

jpb1971, Im sorry your thoughts are consumed with the strays. I know it's really difficult to ponder over if they were let go on purpose or just mistakenly got out and lost.

Living where i do in the country I deal w/ this so often. Struggling myself with a certain situation as we speak.

All we can do is hope that those strays find comfort in their home or a new loving home.

If my partner wasn't so allergic I would be picking up every stray that I could. And our apartment people aren't too happy with us because the most pets that one is allowed here is 2 and we have 3. I'm about to have 4, not gonna tell the apartment...we have already figured a system so that they don't know I have the 4th.

If I were to ever run into a stray yorkie, oh there is no thinking about it...it will have a home. I hope that stray yorkie shows up again.

Default I am with you

I live in the suburbs in OC Ca and a stray yorkie would not be a stray for long with me. I too have more pets than anyone else here in the complex, but I would figure out something. We have very few strays here, the animal control people are very good. One suggestion for anyone that wants to help those strays and cannot take them in, if you buy something for your dog, whether it is food, treats, toys, whatever that they do not like or you do not use, take it to your local shelter or rescue group. That is what I do, I also donate any pet food coupons that I do not need or use. The groups/shelters need all the help they can get.

I live in southern california too and I rarely see that kind of thing as well, I couldn't imagine seeing a poor baby on a highway or something :\

The problem we have here in my area is cats. I am sure that you all heard that they were trying to legalize the shooting or hunting of feral cats. They are every where and as much as I love animals, I have to say that I love my animals and thier health and safety more. These cats will get into our garbage cans, If the can is closed they will knock it over and try to get the lid off. We are no longer allowed to feed outside cats. If you are caught doing this it is a big no no.
I remeber one time right after I got Memphis I had put him out to go potty and since it was slightly chilly outside I had to pee something fierce so I ran in to go potty while he was finding that prime pee spot. Anyway, I come back outside and here is this HUGE tomcat stalking Memphis. Memphis thought that the kitty was just trying to play since this is what my mom and grammas cats do to him, but I paniced, I didn't want him to get attacked by this cat so I whacked the cat with a snow shovel.

I guess what I am trying to say here is that I know that the hunting and shooting of cats seems really harsh but before you pass judgement think about what us here who live with all these cats are going through. On a hot day I can not leave my windows in my car open. I did once and a cat got in there and peed all over in my car. That is not something that is easy to get out of the interior of a car.
I will however take in any stray dog that I see. Usually I dont bring it in the house but I do put it in the garage and make it comfy while I try to find its owner.

I honestly understand your view towards this.

Shelters need lots of things, my hubby works at a printing press and they donate all their 'butt rolls' (the ends of the rolls of the paper they print the newspapers on) to the local shelter, never thought about a shelter needing newspapers but they do! Also, blankets -ANY blankets are always in need, I grab them up a garage sales even if they are stained or worn out and a lot of times if I tell people what they are for they let me have them for free! When Sophie passed I took all her things (but collar) to the shelter.
Around here, people will shoot and poison stray dogs and no one says anything. I agree with Reconsmom about the cats, lucky around here, they pretty much stay out in the woods - too many stray dogs chasing them I guess!
