The thing is, him going in the kennel is a big deal. He's learning that its okay to pee and poop in his living and sleeping space, and that space can be generalized to include other parts of your house...

Most decent sized cities have pet sitting servces that are bonded and can come to your house. I suggest you check that out.

That is just too long to crate a puppy. You are going to have more than just potty training problems if it has no outside stimulus during the day. I'm surprised the breeder didn't give you some advice about this before you purchased the puppy.

I use a product called a wizdog at wizdog.com. It's a plastic bottom thing that holds the peepads or newspaper with a grid on top. I have three yorkies and having them crated seemed cruel to me. They have a pet playard (from Petsmart) with a wizdog (online). I actually order the pee pads in bulk from mylan (do a search for irregular weewee pads in bulk).

They work great for us and although we work during the day, the boys stay in the play pen in a downstairs office.
