How difficult will it be to housetrain in this situation? We just got a Yorkie on Monday (we'd bought it a month ago, but due to a 9 day vacation we just took, we elected to pick him up afterwards)....and I just have a couple of questions here.... 1) Housebreaking since we're not home too much. The previous owner at least newspaper trained him...he's 12 weeks old... 10PM to 6:15AM - Dog is in crate/kennel because we're sleeping and then getting ready for work. 6:15AM to 6:30AM - We let the dog outside so it can go to the bathroom if it needs to. 6:30AM to 5:30PM - We are both away at work...dog is in kennel with newspaper...generally, it goes on the newspaper. 5:30PM to 10PM - Dog is usually out of crate/kennel, and Heidi tries to take him outside rather often and stop him if he tries to go in the house. So given that he's only out of his kennel like 4 hours a day...just how difficult is this going to be?? Since he's in the crate/kennel 20 hours a day....I think no matter what, he'll go on newspaper more often... 2) Introducing him to cats We have two cats...and perhaps we should have been more gradual....our big cat is pretty territorial....and the dog tried to get playful with her, and the cat responded with a hiss and a smack upside the dog's head...the dog actually BLED, that's how hard the cat hit. The kitten we have seems to be alright with the dog...although the puppy is probably a little too playful...any tips on getting the cat to get along and not hurt the puppy? |
Can you go home at lunch time to feed and let him pee? That's an awful long time to leave a new puppy alone. For the first few months I went home at lunch to check on things and feed mine. I started her out in a baby playpen until about 5 months and then moved her into the kitchen with a gate. She is 8 months old now and she has been holding it all day and waits till I get home from work to go. If this keeps up for another 2 weeks I think I will let her roam free all day! Good luck with the house training...it can be tough!! |
I agree, that is a very long time Poor little pup, I could never leave my pup alone that long, much less locked in a kennel. I think it will be very difficult to train a dog locked in a kennel for that many hours. I don't think he can hold it and he will go in the kennel. |
20 hours a day in a kennel is way too much. You are much better off to pad or paper train because that poor puppy can't be expected to hold it all day long. |
He will need to go out in the middle of the night. Also, my dogs get to go outside in the morning before even I get to pee!! They go out the second they start to stir. It's summer now. Hire a neighborhood kid to let him out several times a day and do real crate training. If you put the newspaper in the pen he will learn it's OK to go on the newspaper and it will be difficult to teach him not to. If you WANT the dog to go outside you need a pet sitter to get him out every 1-2 hours while you are away for a month or two, then every 2-4 hours. Otherwise you will have to find another method... |
Schedules are good but that is alot of time in a crate. My boyfriend lets her out at night but she is not crated. She is crated when I go to work but i come home during my lunch. Maybe you could hire a dog walker? |

Oh, I've heard you can litter box train Yorkies...anybody done that or seen it? |
That is a very long time for a dog to be in a crate . he can not hold it for 20 hours, and not to mention its going to be very hard for him to be trained in just 4 hours a day. and hes not going to get very much attention with noone ever home, and in the 4 hours he is out im sure you have other things to do, Not to sound mean or any thing, but it sounds like you guys are really to busy for a puppy. |

If you do a search in the training section, I'm sure you will find lots of info on pad training, since alot of us here do. Good luck! |

I have a six month old that I have litter box trained. You can buy a litter box at Petsmart. I use newspaper instead of the dog litter though, and I just dump it out a few times a day and hose it when it needs it. I like the box because it is a definitive spot for her to go. She learned very quickly. Good Luck!! Kasey |
My boys are potty pad trained and use outside. I'm single and work 9 hour days and my work is a 40 minute drive. Mine run free but they are 2 and 3 yrs old. I would recommend an exercise pen and potty pads. Lots of toys and for God sake keep her away from the big kitty until they can learn to ignore each other. I'd hate for her to get scratched in the eye by accident!! Good Luck. |
My Hannah is 8 months old and she is still not completely house broken and I don't even work and I am usually home with her all day. I really don't think that your dog will catch on very good and yorkies are notorious for being difficult to house train anyway. I am not trying to be mean but if 4 hours a day is all the attention your dog is going to get why did you even get a dog especially a yorkie that requires lots of attention? I really wish you the best of luck and the dog too. Be careful with that cat because they have been know to cause major eye injuries with little dogs. Maybe you can leave the puppy in a bathroom or kitchen closed off with more space than the kennel and then you could close the cat out too. Again good luck and don't give up, its going to be a long road.....:) |

The puppy really needs more time outside the kennel, especially if you're housebreaking him. |
