We Need Help Badly

Hi,

I took Mim's to a BBQ Sat and they had a 10-12 ft high deck with part of it not fenced a very small area UNDER an attached bench. Mim's was playing with other dogs very well, then she was not to be found .

I looked and there she was on the ground she leaped from that height to the ground with out hurting herself but there is no fear in this dog what am I to do??? I am now keeping her on a lead even when just sitting. I am very afraid for this dog she is now leaping from our sunroom to the ground our deck is not done yet. PLEASE give me advise on this . She is my first dog ever and I don't want to lose her.

When you have adventurous pups and dogs you will eventually turn into Macguyver! I've become a wiz with chicken wire and other barracading tools and materials. I won't take my yorkie anywhere that I haven't inspected the fence first because my boy is a runner and he will be gone!!! Good luck to you!

My Wobie is the same way! He likes to jump off couches and beds, and sometimes out of peoples arms! He is only 11 weeks old, so I have just been watching him like a hawk. He is never out of my sight. I'm teaching him to sit and wait for me to pick him up and set him on the ground, so he won't jump.

Your leash is your best friend. Keep it on your baby all the time even running around the house, so you can grab the little monkey before something happens. What I usually do is connect the extending leash to our girl's regular leash and stick the handle in my pocket. This way I can keep her in sight when I need to. We've taken wire fencing and put it all around the deck railing down to the floor so that our little girl can't jump through the slats. We are going to escape proof our backyard gate next, so if she does get off the leash, she'll have nowhere to go. She can run like the wind when she doesn't want to come. And speaking of, you will want to go to puppy obedience training (Petsmart has pretty good classes based on positive reinforcement) so that your puppy can learn to drop things you don't want her to eat, and to come when you want her to. These are important to safeguard her well-being.

I thank you for your posts I will go to PetSmart and the leash is already on for good. Thanks again I am really worried your 11mos old baby sounds just like Mim's she has been on the go since she came home.

I do the same thing with Max - He's leashed with a short leash even in the house until he learns his limitations really well, if ever. I don't have a backyard, but he nefer goes outside without me holding the leash wrapped around my wrist. I don't trust him at all! He's way too adventurous.

I'm thinking maybe it only takes one major scare for them to learn. I say that because Sukoshi fell/jumped (we're not sure which) off the back of our loveseat when she was about 3.5 months old, and she yelled like I have never heard in my life and wouldn't walk on her front right paw. We rushed her to the emergency room (of course it was midnight on a Saturday evening...they can't ever do these things during normal vet hours), and after waiting in the ER forever for our turn, she'd finally quieted down and started walking again. We determined that nothing was broken, and that if it was just a strain/sprain, then there wasn't much they could do for us anyway, and we left. By the next morning, she was running like nothing had ever happened - she was just a drama queen with all the yelling. BUT...Sukoshi doesn't jump off ANYTHING now! She just stares looking at the ground until we put her down. So...maybe it only takes once?! Good luck!
