We've taken wire fencing and put it all around the deck railing down to the floor so that our little girl can't jump through the slats. We are going to escape proof our backyard gate next, so if she does get off the leash, she'll have nowhere to go. She can run like the wind when she doesn't want to come. And speaking of, you will want to go to puppy obedience training (Petsmart has pretty good classes based on positive reinforcement) so that your puppy can learn to drop things you don't want her to eat, and to come when you want her to. These are important to safeguard her well-being.
I do the same thing with Max - He's leashed with a short leash even in the house until he learns his limitations really well, if ever. I don't have a backyard, but he nefer goes outside without me holding the leash wrapped around my wrist. I don't trust him at all! He's way too adventurous.
