| Newby Questions Hello, I'm new to this forum and to Yorkies overall. I've owned Pugs in the past but never a Yorkie. We currently have no dogs or other animals. My family is considering a Yorkie because of what are probably very typical reasons for this forum (1) small size and (2) little to no shedding. If I'm wrong on either of these, please let me know. We have two girls, ages 7 and 4. I generally choose female dogs over male dogs. My main reason is that male dogs typically mark their territory. That is somewhat annoying for me. Are male Yorkies generally smaller than female yorkies? It seems to be true based on what breeders have said about the size of the parents of their litter. Also, are there any reasons to go with a male or a female (temperament, size, health, barking, etc.)? Thanks, Steve P.S. If anyone is or knows of a reputable breeder in the Salt Lake valley, please let me know. |

| Hello Steve, I as well have always had pugs (still have one - six yrs old black pug) and my kids are 7 and 4. My pugs and other dogs have all been boys. Autumn is my first Yorkie (girl) and I must say that I am enjoying having a girl dog this time around. There is no marking of territory and I find that for the most part the girls seem to be alittle bit smaller then the boys (usually anyway.) good luck and let us know what happens. Amie |

| as far as i know there is no proof that males are smaller than females... however females do tend to be more expensive... size is all determined by genes. Because you have small children i'd recommend getting a yorkie no smaller than 5 lbs... they tend to be more sturdy we have a female because we didn't want to deal with the markings.. but there will be TONS on here who will tell you how great males are good luck in your search! |

| the reason it seems the males are small as you say when people speak of the parents, it's because we always breed our females to smaller males. i'd say it's about the same for both sexes as far as size. |

| (1) small size and (2) little to no shedding This is true! Girls and Boys are both wonderful, I think the way your family acts and how loving you are is how your yorkie will act. I love my little man even with his marking (he is not fixed I just had my first litter) but I really don't know how they act if they are fixed. He is really sweet. My female is alittle snobby..lol but is very sweet also,But I have noticed my male is more a lap dog and she likes to play. He is 3 lbs and she is around 5.5 to 6 lbs. I wanted a bigger female so I would not have so much trouble breeding. Hope I helped and welcome to YT.

| Thanks to all of you for responding and for those of you who just read and pondered. This helps put a lot in perspective in regards to size and gender. I'm not sure when we'll actually get a YT but I'm pretty certain our next dog will be a YT. I'll probably opt for a female. For now I'll continue monitoring these forums and will post again when I have my next question or when I finally have a YT. In the meanwhile, if any of you are or know of a reputable breeder in Utah, please let me know. Thanks, Steve |

| Good luck in whatever you decide and welcome to YT. My little guy loves children. He's about 7.5 pounds, so he's nice and sturdy for a Yorkie. Marking is not a good thing no matter what, but I love having a male. I think it's a very good idea to buy from a breeder. He or she will be able to set you up with a dog who will be good with your children.
