New Mommy and Scared!! HI Everyone! This is new for me, and I hope that it works! I have a little dilemma that I am hoping someone can help me with. I am a yorkie mom in Georgia (near Atlanta) and my baby got pregnant accidentally (she's 2.5 years old). I know, I know she should have been spayed, but she was just too tiny and I was waiting for her to gain some weight and then take her, but in the meantime she went in heat and my other yorkie got to her (she had a puppy diaper on and everything!!!) She is only 5 lbs and very tiny. So, now I am faced with a birth that I am very scared about. I have been talking to my vet, but she doesn't know about births!!! And I live an hour from the nearest emergency clinic, so I am afraid if she goes into labor at night or on the weekend I could be in trouble. Almost 2 years ago I had a mommy that I bred and she had FIVE pups...one got stuck and we had to drive an hour in the middle of the night and pay $800 for the emergency c-section. The breeder that I had arranged to be there with us never showed and I had no idea what to do. All the money and hassle is worth it, as long as she was fine (and she was - but 2 pups died). But it was enough drama to make me give it up for good because I love my babies too much to put them through that again. So, this accident has me in a pickle. I am actually looking for a RELIABLE person (breeder, former breeder, etc) or experienced yorkie mommy that could come and be with us during the birth to notice any signs of distress. I am willing to pay for this service if I need to and I just want anything to keep my baby girl safe. Does anyone know what I can do???? Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thank you!

You sound like a very dedicated mother! There's quite a few breeders on YorkieTalk down South, I know of a few Atlanta members, but not sure if they are breeders, too. Good luck on your search, there's a lot to learn about breeding, hopefully you can find some good information before they are due.

I'm in Pennsylvania or I would be there for you (without pay of course)!!!! I highly suggest you get on Ebay today and buy the book "Breeding a Litter" by Beth J. Finder Harris. It does have a lot of good info. I checked Ebay yesterday because I suggested this book for someone else. There were 2 listed at the time. Did your puppy get stuck in the birth canal or half way out? If it happens half way out (happened to me last time...what a scarey nightmare...breech DRY birth stuck half way out!!!!!). Anyway, if that is the case you NEVER try and pull the puppy out! Wait for contractions and help GENTLY pull at that time. My puppy was totally lifeless...no hint of life whatsoever. You definetly need to learn the "shake down" method. It is absolutely necessary to know. It took me like 10 minutes to get my puppy to breath, but he ended up perfectly healthy. there are things you need to learn NEVER to do even if it seem like it makes sense. There are numerous things you try before mouth to muzzle...which is a last resort. Did you know not to breath air into your pup that you have exhaled? Only "puffs" from air in your cheeks. Sure wish I could be there for you! My mom has 3 females and calls me no matter what time it is when they go into labor and I head right over. good luck. read as much as you can and try to find someone to be there with you. Know that you need to get this settled way before your pups are due. No vet will give you advice over the phone (makes them responsible for whatever happens). They will only say "Bring her in". There should be no such thing as a vet that doesn't know about puppies being born. If you don't have any luck finding someone, try to find a vet that might take her in once her temp. tells you that puppies are coming within 24 hours. Please let us know how this goes for you. I hope and pray for only happy results!!

Due soon Thanks for the info Julz. I will try to remember those things. I did get some reading in and know a few do's and dont's but overall, not enough to do anything in an emergency. The last delivery was mostly normal (that mommy had a few litters before) four pups born fine, except for one pups umbilical cord got ripped off its belly just after birth, and then one pup was stuck in the ribcage (already dead) so that is the one that had to come out via c-section. We had the other little one put to sleep that night becuase it was just bleeding so bad and the emergency clinic said that because of the way it tore, there was no way to fix what had happened. Both the ones that did not make it were little girls. This is a different mommy and she is new to this as me so I am more concerned because of that. These pups are due in about a week or ten days. My little mommie is having to go out every 45 minutes or so, because she is so small that she can't hold it longer than that with her big belly. I have moved her into a little pet carrier for sleeping at night (right by my bed on a TV tray up against my nightstand so it won't fall) - just to make sure that we don't roll on her at night. We are used to sleeping with them (we have 3 that sleep with us) since when we move they move, but now she is so fat that she can't move as quickly as before, so I put her in the carrier with her balnket and I sleep with my hand in there on her. She seems to like it. I will be making her a whelping box this weekend and setting up our back room with a big sheet of laminate on the floor with a doggie play pen. This will be the home for her and the pups until they are adopted. I can keep it nice and warm and away from any visitors or my other doggies. Last time I slept in there for the first few days to keep them company. I just hope everything goes well. I will know more tomorrow and I will keep you posted. This is a great website and I have learned a lot just reading the other posts and now I am meeting some great yorkie's people!! Thanks again!!

Pregnancy worries? I know that some breeders will "keep" your Yorkie and watch them when the time is near. They have their own special vets and know what to watch for when problems arise. Call around to some of your local Yorkie groups. I did everything by the book with Duchess' delivery and still had to have c-section and lost one of two puppies. All in all, it was very expensive and scarry. We then had her spayed!! Good luck with the pups!! Diane

If it comes to that then I may look into it, but I hate for her to be in a strange home with stangers on her most fearful night of her life. She has never had pups so liekly she will be a little scared and I just want her to be home and have someone come over if that is at all possible. But again, if I cannot locate anyone that can help out, I will do what I need to for her to be safe and have healthy pups (in spite of me, right?) Thanks for your thoughts. | |
