| New user and Yorkie Mom Hi there! This is my first post (not to mention my first forum) ever. I just bought an adorable yorkie puppy here in Midland, Texas and he has been doing great! Berkley (or Berk as we tend to call him) is just now 2 pounds with his collar on and is getting bigger everyday!!! I do have a question for other yorkie owners- Berk has been chewing on my fingers alot lately and it's beginning to be painful. I understand he is teething and I invested in a few of those toys that you can freeze that feel good on their gums, but he would rather chew on me. Yesterday he bit so hard that it broke the skin. I don't want biting to become a habit. I want to stop this early. Any Advice??? Thank you!!!!

| Welcome to YT! We live in Brenham, TX. Berkley is such a cute name! As for the biting, I think I've seen people suggest just a firm "no bite" each time he does it and replace your fingers with a chew toy each time. Consistency and firmness is important. We really didn't have much problem with chewing when Tatum was a baby but I think the little bit she did, we tried that method. This too shall pass, of course, but you should try to nip it in the bud quick. You'll love YT..... I've learned so many helpful things here. Now, we need to see some adorable Berk pictures!!

| I train dogs and I've always told my students, never let your puppy do something that you don't want them to do when they are older. Ie: when a puppy jumps on you it might be cute, but when that dog is over 100lbs it isn't so cute. biting is no different, your fingers are not a chew toy and he has to learn that straight-away. When my pups would bite my fingers I'd make a Yelp and say "no bite" and immediately replace my fingers with a toy, chew, or even an ice cube. timing is everything. You can set the scene up..have your replacement toy or? ready..wait for him to go for your fingers..yelp (loud) with a NO BITE, replace toy..good boy...good boy. It won't happen over night but eventually he should get the idea. Make sure everyone in the family is on board with this otherwise it won't work as the pup will become confused and frustrated. I do not believe is slapping or hitting the nose..I have been known to make my fingers like a mothers mouth and kinda close my fingers around the pups muzzel when I say NO BITE (gently with fingers). Congrats on your new bundle. They are the best, and make my life so much happier.. |

| Good advice! Quote:
This is really good advice... I would suggest taking your pup to puppy classes, they REALLY helped Tobey who is now almost 5 months. The key is being firm and consistent. tobey got the idea of "no" and "uh ah" really quick, but he would still get overly excited and playful and start lunging at our fingers during play time. If fact, my husband thought it was funny to put his fingers near his mouth even when he's just laying around because Tobey almost automatically opens his mouth!! its funny, like a reflex or something. We finally started using a spray bottle with water because he wouldn't stop nipping at our hands or our heels when we walked through the house. It wasn't aggressive.. just normal puppy behavior, but NOT something I want to continue. You really have to be diligent about training if you want a well behaved dog. Good luck!! | |

| First let me say welcone to YT...one of my babies used to do this, I broke him of it by simply closing my hand into a ball so he couldn't get to my fingers and then just saying "no biting." It's no fun for them if they can't get to your fingers. Then try replacing your hand with a dental bone. My older babies still love to chew on the blue "Nylabone Dental Chew Bone" with bumps, I have to replace them often because they chew on them quite a bit. Good Luck! |
