Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | That really is awful about little Scrappydo and the dryer - he's been on my mind all day.... I keep thinking of more - I should just write them down and we could make a Safety Sheet maybe for the FAQ Section ? Not all dogs find yorkies as cute as we do - they are one of the MAIN threats to small dogs (besides cars) when walking your yorkie - ALWAYS WATCH FOR LOOSE DOGS ....they can attack in a second - you could be standing outside talking to a neighbor and they can come out of nowhere - so ALWAYS be on the lookout for that ! |

| One year ago, our Pomeranian end up hung to dead. She could climb over the board we used, to separated her from other places in the house. So we add lease on her, but didn't realize the lenght of the lease was just couple inches over the woodboard.... . Yorkies are also like to jump/climb over things. |

| Never, never, never, close the foot rest on a recliner if you do not see all the babies you own.....A puppy I placed was killed when he was closed up in a foot rest by a 13 y.o. grand-daughter. Rocky was a tough little guy... |

| Human Food Dangers... Some people may not know that certain human foods are harmful to dogs. I know we all love to give our babies table scrap especially when they give us the "woe is me" look. But there are some foods that their stomachs cannot digest and can potentially be lethal for them. Some of the foods that are toxic to them are:
Chocolate

Onions (all kinds)

Grapes

Raisins

Broccoli

Pork, espeically pork fat
Other household items that are toxic are:
Anti-Freeze (Ethylene Glycol)

Spent Hops (as used in brewing beer)

Ibuprofen/Advil (causes ulcers)
| That sounds great, red98vett, it'd be a great addition to the FAQ and we can make it a document that can be sent to all new members, and it'd probably make a great document for all breeders to hand out to new Yorkie parents! Everyone has such great additions for safety, this might turn out to be a booklet! |

| My Yorkie is quite a chewer.... He went though a pig ear in about an hour!!!! Yikes. BeanSprout almost choked on the last bit--- it got lodged in his throat, and I had to get it out myself. Super scary. I will never give him one again. So, the pig ears can present a choking hazard! |

| The carseat was the best thing I have purchased for Maggie. Got it at Petsmart. It has mesh sides, pockets for treats or a leash, safety clip lead to hook them in, it's elevated so she can look out the window. I also bought a baby watch mirror that clips on my visor. This way I can check on her without taking my eyes off the road. It is highly recommended, that if you have air bags, please do not put your carseat in the front seat.

KEEP THESE COMING ! I think a safety list compiled by members who have actually experienced some of these dangers.... & also... what we've read or heard about, is a great way to help others AND ourselves... and of course, our precious yorkies or other small dog breed... | |

| My kitty took a ride in the dryer when he was a baby. My son had grabbed something out of there as we were getting ready for school/work. I walked by, kicked shut and started it. I heard a clicking like those plastic belt buckles or something, went on to take a shower. Afterwards, the dryer sounded like thumping, like a tennis shoe in there. To my horror, I opened it and our poor baby flopped forward panting and bleeding from the mouth. I was sure he would die, but we poured alcohol over his body and rushed him to the vet. The bleeding was from biting his tongue. Frightening!

| I remember reading an article years and years ago about a lady that had one of those tiny chihuahuas. He drowned in the washer. Apparently, he crawled into the pile of dirty clothes and she came along and put it in the washer. This story has stuck with me for all of these years. I thought it was so sad. If not in a car seat, at least, put a halter and leash on your baby when he is by the open car window. You can then hold onto the halter and leash for safety. In a repeat and repeat and repeat mode...keep electrical cords off the floor and covered. They can chew through one in seconds. |
