| ![]() so sorry you are going thru this. i too had a LS baby. She was my very first yorkie and my breeder was in Florida and would not take any responsibility for it. I had her for 2 years before she passed. She was on meds and a special diet everyday. And yes.... my life changed and it was all about her. I still miss her.... she was my very first yorkie baby. Please keep us updated on Rio. I hope this breeder does good by her. Is this guy sal? |

| ![]() My heart is breaking for you. I am glad you are at peace with your decision and realize it is what is best for Rio and yourself. The day after I brought Sophie home I went through similar situations with her and was up with her every 1.5-2 hours feeding her, watching her, sleeping in the living room floor..... I ended up admitting her to the hospital so they could run her LS test and monitor her in the fasting process since she was so small. It really gave me a 2 day break though & I was able to catch up on sleep. My story has a happy ending however and I wish that Rio's could be the same. Sophie ended up with cocidocous (sp?), which still can kill a dog but we have pulled through and are a TOTALLY different dog from when i brought her home. I wish Rio the best and hope her original breeder can turn her around. I also am VERY impressed with Sammies breeder offer you a girl!!! Take care and keep us updated on your ![]()

| ![]() My first pet had liver shunt, just like yours too small for surgery. Breeder chose to give me another dog in return and let me nurse mine and give it meds, heck some breeders really don't want to bother. the breeder told me of course that I'm responsible for meds and I signed papers saying so... but it was me and her til the end and it hurt, me, but she knew mama was taking good care of her the whole time. She passed a month 1/2 later at my house. I knew it's a hard decision and your heart is broken, an idea is to ask the breeder if he'd like for you to care for her til the end... if you have the strength to. It's emotionally draining. It's hard either way, She's gone now and he may be the most loving breeder in the world and you could easily be at rest with that. Just wanted to share my experience, I'm so sorry you've had to go through this. |

| ![]() Someone mentioned contacting a Yorkie Rescue(this was one that did free LS surgeries). I couldn't afford the surgery, so I was going to surrender her-they told me that she would not be a good candidate because of her size. I applied for care credit, the whole bit. My vet finally said, the chances of her making it through surgery are so small because of her size. And she had sooo many toxins in her body, she didn't have time to grow. |

Rio is too small for surgery and at this point...the chances of her surviving is slim....She is 1 pound 9 ounces but her frame/bones suggest she should be well over 2 and a half pounds. So you can only imagine how fragile she is.... I don't think I can handle seeing Rio dying in my arms....I would not be able to handle it!!!! And I don't want Sammie getting more attached. He constantly lays in her crate and I locked the door yesterday and he keeps looking in. The whole situation saddens me and I keep in touch with Steve (the guy who has Rio) and he's giving me updates...She has an infection (very high white blood cell count) so he is trying to treat that first before he goes back to the vet about the liver shunt. That is what the vet suggested also... Thank you guys for posting comments on Rio.... I still have her myspace up too! www.myspace.com/riotheyorkie If you want to visit her! | |

| ![]() I am so sorry you had to make such a horrible decision. I don't mean to keep harping on this but, please think about suggesting UT to the breeder. She may be too small for most vets to do the surgery, but UT can do Liver Shunt surgery on very very small dogs and the odds of them surviving are much higher at UT. They saved one of my rescues with LS that no other vet would even attempt surgery on. Maybe he would be willing to release her to a member close to Knoxville who would be willing to pay for the surgery? I live close to Nashville but if I lived in Knoxville I would take her in a heart beat. Prayers for you and little Rio

![]() ![]() ![]() I agree... A lot of vets won't even attempt something like that because most vets don't have THAT much experience with it. But the doctors at UT really work miracles.
