| hi everybody. I'm new here and own a cavalier king charles spaniel. I'm thinking of a second dog. I'm thinking of a male yorkie. But i need to do my research first. What is the Yorkie personality like? Is it true they don't shed? Thanks in advance. Love the website!! |

| First of all..welcome. I am a first time yorkie owner so I don't have the experience that most of the people on here have. I have a 5 lb. male yorkie and he is the BEST. I know some owners say their yorkies are hard to housebreak but Murfee was easy. He is a great traveler and is good with my grandkids. Now he is stubborn and pouts when he doesn't like something that is going on that he doesn't like, but he honestly the best dog we have ever owned. My husband loves him and they are best buddies (but he loves mommy best). He doesn't shed at all. I keep him fairly short...about 1-2 inches. He takes just minutes to bathe and dry him. I really can't say enough good things about him |

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk!! Yorkies have a great personality, but if they aren't taught from the start who is in charge, they can quickly develop an attitude where they think they are above you. but you already have a small dog so i'm sure you know how easy it is to give in those little faces! yorkies do not shed but when they lose their puppy coat and develop their adult coat they do.. at least i notice layla did quite a bit! |

| YT 500 Club Member | I am a first time Yorkie owner of six years. My husband wanted a Golden Retriever, but I talked him into a Yorkie, and now he is hooked. They are so outgoing, stubborn, smart, and cute! I find that mine has quite an attitude. She can get naughty. We call it the terrier attitude. Sometimes I think she is more like a cat in the fact that she often comes when she wants to and not when she is called. I think that the best thing about a Yorkie is that little face. It makes your heart melt! |

| I am a new yorkie owner myself. I have always had different breeds of dogs. (pugs, doberman, mutt) I can honestly say that I have never had this kind of love for or from any other dog. I have a friend with a yorkie as well and she would agree hands down. I also do not find her to shed at all. That is part of why we got her my son has bad allergies. Good luck no matter what you decide. |

| Thanks for your answers. Do they bark a lot? Are they nippy? |

| WELCOME ![]() Welcome to YorkieTalk. When thinking about a yorkie, remember that above all they are Terriers. They were bred to hunt and selective breeding has not taken the terrier drive from them (for the most part). My dogs: do not shed some of my kids bark more than they should, but I consider that due to lack of training on my part they are not nippy -- when they decide to bite, they bite (this is very very rare) My two intact adult females fight -- my two adult intact males DO NOT fight hope this helps.... Would love to see pics of your cavalier king charles spaniel. Last edited by chattiesmom; 04-21-2007 at 03:50 PM. |

| Murfee doesn't bark unless he thinks he is protecting us..and then he stops when we tell him too. He is not nippy at all. I think he has only snapped at someone twice and he is 3. Both of them needed to be snapped at |

| Donating YT 30K Club Member | I have 2 right now and have had 5 all together starting way back in 1970. I love them. 4 out of 5 were not barkers. Pixie my newest is turning into one only because I have a Pom who barks constantly and she is learning from her. I went for 8 years without a Yorkie when I got the Pom and couldn't stand not having a Yorkie. They are sweet but sassy and just little sweethearts.

| Yorkie Personality - So much love!! Otis has only nipped at one person, he does bark at kitties and sometimes at people walking on the sidewalk while he's policing the neighborhood from the front window. He's full of energy and love. He still has the terrier nature to run and hunt. If he finds and open door or gate he would take off for a wild adventure and not look back. (even though I know he loves me!) Otis is my 2nd yorkie, they are a great breed!

| They don't shed, they have wonderful personalities! Miko was very easy to potty train(persistence is key) and he has never bit anyone He rarely ever barks...When he was a pup he had a bit of separation anxiety for awhile but we got that under control, and like I said, he never barks anymore As far as their personalities go, they are big dogs in little dogs bodies. Incredibly sweet and expressive!

| I don't have a yorkie yet, but the breed has captured my heart. Good luck in your decision, and just know that out of the tons and tons of people on yorkietalk, no one regrets getting a yorkie. They are that lovable. Welcome to yorkietalk!

| Max is my first "little dog" that I raised on my own. (Had an Irish Setter and a mixed breed and a zillion cats). He has become part owner of my heart, makes me laugh like no other pet has ever done, is my little buddy, loyal to a fault, sweet, stubborn, sassy, bright (but with the attention span of a flea unless it's about what he wants). I totally adore him. You do have to be sure they understand who's boss all of the time or they will take over. That's part of the fun of a Yorkie - they're very high energy....and those little faces! Good luck.
