| Second Dog Hi everyone, I currently have a two year-old Yorkie named Frankie. He's a pretty good pup with the exception of shyness around other dogs. My husband and I have been wanting a second dog, and will be bringing home a chihuahua brother for Frankie next Friday. Has anyone been through the same experience of adding a second dog to their family? Any tips? Thanks in advance! |

| There was an adjustment period when our first was a little jealous and standoffish, but they get along fine now. They're pack animals, so they learn who is alpha. My yorkie is the younger and follows the other around all day. He realizes who is top dog...first the humans, then the older dog, and then him. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I had Maya who was an 8 yera old pom whenI brought home Cali, my Yorkie. She was 9 weeks old and loved Maya.Maya didn't want to be bothered but after awhile they would lay next to each other. So in January when Cali was 1 1/2 years old I brought home Pixie a 13 month old Yorkie who is full of energy, Cali is very mellow. At first I felt bad because Cali did not like Pixie and wouldn't play with her and seemed so sad that she was here. Now almost 3 months later they play/fight together and lay snuggled up togther. It took about 6 weeks before this happened. I am so happy I got Pixie. Just don't force anything and they will work it out. Some dogs take to each other right away some take time but I believe they all like having each other eventually. Good luck.

| It always takes my zoo is a little while to adjust to any new member. I think once it finally settles in that this new member isn't going anywhere, their routines have remained the same, same amount of love and attention, treats, etc. All works out just fine in the end.

| Thank You Thanks everyone! I am going to print out this thread to show my husband. He loves our Yorkie, Frankie, very much and is anxious for them to get along quickly. Last night, he put the two of them in Frankie's crate. Frankie just sat in the corner while our Chi, Chachi, cried to get out. I came out and found what he was doing and was mortified! My hubby said he's giving it two months, and if they're not getting along well by then, wants to give the new pup, Chachi away. I'm already attached to Chachi and don't want it to come to that. I told my hubby it'll take some time, but he thinks he's the know-it-all dog trainer. (He subscribes to the old-school way of dog training). Hopefully, this thread will convince him that its going to take some time. |

If your animals are well loved and secure in their home; and you do not make a big deal out of a new family member--whether it be human or animal; everything will work out naturally. Everyone figures their place out pretty quickly. | |
