Donating YT 14K Club Member | What exactly is a liver shut? I know that yorkies are prone to getting them. I know that this is hereditary. Question is: What exactly does a liver shunt do? How do they test puppies for it? The reason I ask is because Gia was only 9 weeks old and she dies suddenly??? |

| A liver shunt is a condition in which one or more blood vessels bypasses the liver, and the blood is not cleansed of it's toxins. A pre/post meal blood test is done and will indicate if liver shunt MIGHT be a problem. If the test results come back suspicious, more tests are required in order to determine if the pup has a LS. |

| My vet doesn't seem to want to test for LS as a routine test. What would cause a vet to suspect LS? What would your first symptom be. I know I could look this up but I'd rather get personal experiences from anyone reading this post. Txshopper73, what were your first symptoms? Sylvia |

My friend says that I should try and find out who their vet was and call them to find out the real reason she died. Maybe there's more to the story than what I was told. | |

| You could hve an autopsy done and let the breeder know so she doesn't continue to breed those two parents, but since Gia had other problems like the roach back and the hernias then she probably had already made that decision I hope. You really can't do the bile liver test on a real young puppy because they cannot go that long without food because of the low blood sugar risk. There is also no way to PREVENT liver shunt or do DNA tests to see if your puppy will have it based on the parents. Perfectly fine parents with no genetic history of the condition can have it crop up in one of their pups. It is not something the breeder can protect against 100%. I was also sad to hear about Gia. She was such a sweet little thing. I guess God thought she would make a good angel. Last edited by SoCalyorkiLvr; 05-27-2005 at 04:53 PM. |
