I think yorkies, as all pets, are going to behave according on how they were raised, just like your own kids... Luna was raised with having a lot of kids comming in and out the house, beside my own kids... She has a wonderful temper and is very very very patient with kids, but she will never be unsupervised with any kid that is not one of mine... I would be afraid someone (either the dog or the kid) would be hurt... I am willing to raise our second pup, (still no name decided) the same way, everyone is allowed to pet him, nicely and carefully, I don?t allow anyone to pick him up yet, he is still too squirmy, and if they want to pet him, everyone has to be seated.

On the other hand, my kids have been raised around pets, and are gentile, nice and caring... so, I would say, go for it, if you will have the care, the time and the intention to supervise everyone...

My kids are 6 and 9 now, but they were 5 and 8 when we got Luna... and my 5 years old dedicated her so much time to hand feed her, and train her...

My girls are 13 and 7, our yorkie is 3 months old and weighs 2 pounds, they are good with her, me and my hubby tell them to always watch where they are walking(no shoes on in the house), and they can only hold her if they are sitting on the floor, we told them that if they drop her or step on her or be too rough it can really hurt her or worse, but sometimes Madison gets the best of them! lol, ( she likes to attack when you are laying in the floor)

If you feel that your kids are mature enough to have a small dog as a pet, then I think you would be ok, Yorkies are so loving and have alot of playfulness, what would we do without our little furkids?

My kids now grown had been raised with big and very small dogs, They was taught from a young age how to be gentle with animals. I have two Yorkies now both 5 lbs and I now have two Grandbabys, They will be taught the same as my kids was at a very young age. I would not sell a Yorkie or any other small pet to a person with very young children unless I knew the people very well and was able to see that their child/ children was taught how to to be gentle and treat an animal. there are a lot of parents that get small animals and let their small children carry them around and do as they please with them and that should not be. these little ones are so fragile and can be hurt very easy. and if one has small children and small pets they need to be watched at all times.

I agree with the other posts. It is about how you teach your kids to handle them. We got Katy when my Granddaughter was 2. Katy is almost 2 and my Granddaughter (Aria) 4 1/2. Now each of them get very upset if you seperate them from each other.

My DH and I do not exist for Katy when Aria is visiting.

Pepper always loved kids and has been around kids ages 7 and up pretty often. They all know though how to handle such a small dog properly and play gentle. I know those kids and can trust them. Plus, he's 6 lbs and not as fragile as the tiny ones. He just loves kids and can't get enough of them, and goes crazy, pulling on the leash and walking on his hind paws, once he sees a kid, even from distance...

Thank you everybody. I think the boys would do well with a Yorkie. I watch them real well around my miniature Poodle, they have learned to be nice and they do not ever pick her up.

my yorkies have grown up w/ my 2 boyz which are 9 and 7 yrs old. They are very careful w/ them and they even want to help take kare of the puppies when lilly has a litter. here's a few pix of my boyz & my little neice w/ my babies below !!
