| Question for Breeders How many litters should a female yorkie have per year? I am asking because someone mentioned to me that hers has 2 litters per yr. Is this good?

Donating YT 14K Club Member | Considering that most females come into heat every 6 months, then it is possible to have 2 litters a year. Now, how often the person breeds is the questions. Some say to breed 2 cycles, rest one. Some bitches only come into heat every 10-11 months...hence producing only 1 litter a year. I, personally, think it's good to give bitches a break. I know that I'd hate to be preggers constantly.

| litters Two per year every year is not wise breeding. There are many factors involved..size, easy of whelping, litter size, length of time between heat cycles, some go 6 months, others as long as 12 months..I have bred many bitches twice in a row when all went well...but they were always rested at the next cycle...it is not uncommon for an overbreed bitch to have a reputured uterus as she ages..and sections are ocmmon when the uterus muscle becomes worn out... |

| Thank you. I was wondering about that. I don't think this person rests her females and breeds them every cycle up until about age 6. I hope the puppies and mommies are both ok with this type of breeding.

That is very sad. I've heard of an out-of-state vet saying it was okay to breed them 5 times straight and then retiring them. I also know of someone here in town that (last I spoke to her) she had bred her girl 4 times in a row. She'd say she was going to rest her girl...then, "OOPS! Well, they bred, what can I say!" Well, I said a whole lot...like it did any good. IMO, it's cruel to let a bitch breed that many times in a row.

| litters That would add up to about 11/12 litters in the bitches life...there is nothing sadder then a worn out brood bitch...seen so many come from puppymills to rescues..most of their teeth are gone, and their knees are often blown out... |

| Funny, that is exactly what I heard her say....ooops! Well, what can I do now? Very Sad! I kind of suspected she was over breeding these dogs.

Donating YT 14K Club Member | That's a damned shame! I understand that accidents can happen...but with some people, they seem to happen all the time!

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | If someone is a really good experienced breeder, she would by now (4 litters) figure out to seperate the boy/s from the girl/s in heat. JMHO |

All I kept think was, OMG, I had my kids a few years apart and thought it was too close together! I couldn't imagine what those poor bitches must be going though. How horrible.
