Bobbie, I'm going to ask you this since you are a vet-tech. I've talked to my vet about having my 3 boys neutered and asked about the anthesia he uses. He told me he use an injection of xylazine & ketamine. From what I've read, this is not that great. Can you please comment on this?

that is most likely just a pre-med before intubation and anesthesia. If its not, then i wouldn't let that vet do the surgery. its better to have then hooked up to anesthesia and all the machines then to just have a iv cathader in with a syringe full of drugs. its easier to monitor the patient when on Iso anesthesia and safer. btw, i'm a surgical tech for an animal emergency hospital, just in case you think i'm pulling this out of my butt. LOL

She's right, I would not let anyone operate on my dog with just an IV in. Make sure they have the anesthesia machine so they can monitor him better.

i always get the meds but not always use it you can tell when your dogs in pain

I am reluctant to give these types of medications..you do not want a Yorkie medicated to the point they are not moving around after surgery.

I have had many spayed/neutered/c-sectioned..and they came home within hours, alert and ready to eat dinner...they were able to go potty and many ran around acting as nothing happened. Some had to be penned to make them rest, others went to bed to rest, but were alert and not groggy...Yorkies can go down so fast and go into shock...so please watch them close on any medication that sedates them...if they have some pain, it keeps them from running around...that was my problem..mine for the most part did not act liek they felt any pain at all...

This is what used to think about infants as well; they dont feel pain during a circumcision.

Although, clearly yorkierose, you have the experience, I have very little. My feeling is, of course they feel pain. You had an excellent point, though, about it limiting their activity so they dont overdo it. I just dont like to see my "babies" in any pain.

I did have my male neutered (but also had dew claws removed) and he was in pain afterwards. Seeing him the way he was actually broke my heart

I can see though that my opinion seems to be in the minority here.

having a cat declawed is in no way comparable to the pain of a neuter. Yes, declawing hurts, and it hurts like a bitch. There is no way i would ever skip out on pain meds after this procedure because as a tech i've seen how painful they are right after surgery. Would i have it done to my cats tho, yes, if it was needed. They are in pain for a few days but with the right medication they do better. this is not a declawing thread tho so back to the pain of a neuter. The dogs do feel pain but i believe its only at their incision site becuase when they move around it tugs at the skin, this is why slight pain is good. if they feel pain when moving around this will keep them settled.

Thank you guys so much! I feel better now I think. My husband is taking him to the vet tomorrow for the surgery. I'm not sure what time the surgery will be because all they told us was that surgery check-in time is from 9-10am. My husband is taking him up there at 9:00. I hope that doesn't mean Thumper's going to have to be there forever in a cage before they start the procedure. I just want this to be over with. I don't know why i'm so worried.

So should my husband ask the vet if they have an anesthesia machine? He says he doesn't want to ask but if it's important then i want him to! And also, is it really important that he have blood work done?

Cooper is being neutered in the morning and I was going to ask some of the same questions. I would like to no if they shave them much, I know that is a silly question but I would like to know. Good luck with Thumper and we will say a prayer for you

Sending Prayers and Doggie Kisses you way.Im Sure Thumper will be fine Just make sure you keep yourself busy during the time he is having Surgery.
