questions about neutering We're having Thumper neutered next Friday. The vet said it will cost $60 and if we want him to have medication afterwards for pain it will be $25 extra. Why wouldn't someone want to give their dog pain medication? Does that sound like a normal price? I haven't checked around anywhere else. They also said that if he seems groggy afterwards that they will keep him overnight. I just hate thinking of him being there all day (bringing him in at 9am) and night. I know i will not be able to sleep and i'll probably be crying lol Hey, i'm pregnant, of course i'm going to cry :) I don't want to have him at home though if something is wrong. But is there going to be someone there with him the whole time? I just really want him to be at home in his bed where he's comfortable. I know I am going to be stressing so much until this is over. What was everyone else's experiences with this? Did they keep your dog overnight? I am so worried. |
My 7 mth, 3 pound, Princeton got neutered a week ago. He also had 6 retained baby teeth removed at the same time. He was in at 9am and went home at 2pm. The vet gave me an anti-inflammatory, antibiotic and pain medications for home. The first day he was pretty out of it and the next day he wanted to play. I kept him in an xpen so he would not get too wild and rupture his sutures. The cost was $636. |
pain I do not think dogs experince pain in the same way we do as humans. Of course, they feel pain, but I have watched how Yorkies react to pain for over 30 yrs...it is not what we think... I am reluctant to give these types of medications..you do not want a Yorkie medicated to the point they are not moving around after surgery. I have had many spayed/neutered/c-sectioned..and they came home within hours, alert and ready to eat dinner...they were able to go potty and many ran around acting as nothing happened. Some had to be penned to make them rest, others went to bed to rest, but were alert and not groggy...Yorkies can go down so fast and go into shock...so please watch them close on any medication that sedates them... |

Rocky was neutered last month. The surgery was done at 11am and I brought him home, awake, at 3pm. He did not have any pain meds after he came home. I asked about them and Doc P said that he should be ok without them. He was. I asked that they do him early in the day so that he could come home for the night. If you're having anxiety about him staying, tell them your concerns and ask if they could do him early so that you could have him home to watch him during the night. Please let us know how he's doing after surgery. |
Harley was neutered in Jan. and he also had 5 teeth removed. They also used the laser which they said was better with the healing. They did the op around 2 and i picked him up at 3:30. they gave him pain meds after the surgery but nothing to take home and he was fine. I paid around $170 for all of it. |
also from what i remember i paid more for the teeth removal than the actual operation. |
morgan's spay and retained baby teeth probably cost about $300 and that was with pain meds and antibiotics. i took morgan home after work that day and she basically slept the rest of the day but did want to eat dinner at her regular time or whenever anyone else was eatting. LOL i don't think i gave her any of the pain meds. she was absolutely fine. |
Thumper was neutered in August 2006(7 months old) He stayed over night -my Vet is opened 24 hours . He didnt have pain medicine.He came home with a e-collar and internal stitiches. It cost about 300.00 . Please have blood work done before surgery.This will rule out blood disorders. I Love the name. We named our yorkie Thumper because he is a big yorkie. when he was a little puppy it sounded like a herd of yorkies.Sending prayers and Kisses to you and Thumpe. |
3 yrs ago I had one of my males nuetered and one of my females spayed on the same day. The vet gave pain meds to me for my female but said males don't need don't need "extra" pain med. 2 years ago I had Miss Abby spayed and she was sent home with pain meds and this past Summer Carson was nuetered and was not sent home with pain med. My vet keeps the dogs overnite as a rule but he knows me and new keeping Abby and Carson alone in a cage unattended all night was not a option so they both came home and I set up a little "recovery " area for my babies and we all slept in the same room away from my other Yorkies. They both did fine. |
Pepper was neutered 3 months ago, he went in in the morning and the doctore advised us to leave him overnight, (I was working and hubby went to pick him up in the afternoon :( ). He was very groggy and just wanted to sleep. I picked him up the next day, he seemed very happy and doing great. He didn't get any meds for pain, but it didn't look like he was hurting at all. He was a little calmer for a day or two, paid no attention to his stitches (external) and actually soon I found myself having trouble keeping him from jumping all over the place like he always does :rolleyes: . The stitches were removed 2 weeks later and it took like a minute. Overall, I was stressing beforehand but all went so smooth it really turned out not to be a big deal. They did the laser surgery on Miko too for his neutering. They say it's a quicker recovery and healing, like keri1973 said. As far as the actual neutering, don't worry :) He'll be fine, and most places let you take them home the same day :) |
I work in a vets office as a vet tech and unless there is someone there all night there is no reason for your baby to stay overnight. I would insist on bringing my pet home the same day. He is better off at home with you than in an empty vet office! Also we rarely ever give males pain meds after neutering. The little pain theu feel only helps, as they will not be too active and that's what we want after surgery! Even the females usually don't need meds unless there was something unusual about the spay or if they have something else done like some here did, teeth etc. Again because if they experience a little pain they will stay more calm than if they don't feel any pain. Does any of this make sense? I hope I explained it right .:) |
I would bring him home even if he is a little groggy, which is normal anyway, because you can watch him and he will be much more comfortable. I've had many neutered while fostering, and only a couple were sent home with meds and that was because of a few teeth being extracted. He will do just fine, so don't worry so much. I know, easier said than done. ;) |
