| Bleeding It's been 18 days since Angel gave birth and she's still bleeding. It's not like gushing or anything but she leaves blood spots wherever she sits. Is it normal that's she's still bleeding 18 days after delivering pups?

| I have had moms leave dark stains after 3 weeks but not bright red blood. Did your vet gie her oxytocin to clean her out within 24 hours after whelping? Are you sure she does not have a whole or portion of retained placenta. If she were my dog, I would take her to the vet for an x-ray. She might have pyometria and it is extremely important to have her treated if necessary. Any temp? Eating well? Let us know what your vet says. Last edited by admin; 05-24-2005 at 12:08 AM. |

It's like a brownish-red. Not bright red like when us women bleed during "that time" but more like how we bleed towards the end. It's reddish but also brownish. She's been like this since birth. I havent taken her temp. I didn't really think about it. She's acting normal, and full of life. She's eating a LOT but im told that's normal since she's feeding 3, 18 day old pups. The more they drain from her the more she eats. Im not sure what to do since the vet says nothing will show until there was an infection. Should I take her there and have them give her that shot anyway? IS it to late to have that done? Can it cause damage to her?

| Oxytocin will not be of any benefit now. If the uterus is distended or full of fluid that would show on X-ray. BUT, and this is the important BUT, it sounds like she is slowly healing as she should..I was concerned but I mis-read your post and thought the blood was bright red..I would just keep her clean by using warm water on paper towel and she sounds like she will be fine..Maybe, you can call your vet for advice.. |

| I have gone to sites on the web and looked things up, one of the things I read, and I'd have to look it up to cite where, said the females can bleed for 5 weeks after the puppies were born. Matty is not quite 3 weeks old but Lady is not bleeding hardly at all, just enough to make a mess of her hair after 3 days of not brushing it. Sylvia |

| If she was infected, wouldn't she be in pain, or act differently? She seems so happy and playful. I'll call the vet but I think that's pointless. They are gonna say "bring her in so we can look at her". Which is what they always say. In that case, I may as well just bring her in without calling lol. What would you suggest? Just keep an eye on her or bring her in?

| Just my personal opinion and I'm no expert but if she doesn't have a temperature and no odor she's probably fine.. If she has an infection her discharge would smell really bad.. and she wouldn't be feeling well.
