| Question re: worm medicine Hi.....I have a question regarding worm medicine. My little Zoey, who is 12 weeks old today, had her third series of shots yesterday and her 2nd round of worm medicine to take (series of 3 doses each). She did fine the other times she had her shots and worm meds, but yesterday she had a strange reaction. I don't know for sure whether it was from the shots or the worming. About an hour after she got home from the vets, I gave her the first dose in this series of worm meds.....then about an hour after that, she started acting really agitated, scratching at her face, jumping all around in her bed, couldn't get comfortable, whimpered, then vomited a large amount. She continued to act agitated, and I checked for any swelling in her mouth or trouble breathing, which she wasn't having, but she kept whimpering and her ears stayed down close to her head....then she had another episode of vomiting. All she wanted to do was climb in my lap and stay there after that, then eventually slept for several hours and then seemed ok. She has since been fine and back to her perky self, eating well and drinking plenty of water. It is now time for the next dose of worm med today. I am wondering if somehow the larger dose than she had a month ago made her sick. I do not see how she could have worms, since she has never been outdoors or around any other dog feces. I am afraid to give it to her, as she had me sooo worried yesterday. Do any of you have thoughts on this or advice you can give me??? I would appreciate it. Zoey's mom |

| You definately wouldnt have to worm her everyday or even every month if she is not going outside. What is the name of the wormer? & what doesage are you giving her, how much does she weigh & how often were you told to give it too her. Generally if my dog has been on the ground or had contact with another dog (or I see or suspect worms) I will wormer her then again 7 days later to kill larvae that might have hatched. Wormings can be hard on their intestines so you should give some yogurt a hour after to help replinish good bacteria. Think about the dosage very carefully. Report the behavior w/your vet or the company on the vac batch & wormer just incase. Sounds like she had a reaction to something but not sure what? I'm glad she got better. You might keep some generic childrens benedryl in the cabinet, if that swelling could have completely stopped her breathing. I wouldnt give hermore until consulting the vet, He could have gave you the wrong meds. |

| Thanks so much for your reply. I don't know the name of the wormer, but the dose is 0.7 cc and she weighs 3.8 lbs. What is the dose of children's Benedryl to give if a pup does have a reaction (cc per kg or oz)? I will definitely keep some on hand. I do not think I will give her another dose of wormer, I will watch her stool and if I see worms, then give it to her. But like I said, she has never been outdoors or around any other animal feces so I don't see how she could have worms, and she was wormed a month ago as well. Thanks again for the advice. | Puppies generally get worms thru their mother. One dose of worm medicine is all that is needed for this when they are weined. Sounds like your little 12 week old puppy has already had more medication than she should have at this tender age. http://www.wholisticanimal.com/petvaccinations.html http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/story.hts/front/1377004 |

| Thanks so much for your reply the other day.....and I took your advice and have not given Zoey the rest of her worming meds. She is fine now and back to her feisty self ! I will be sure to tell the vet of her reaction when she goes for her next shots, in case part of it was from the shots. I also asked the breeder to be sure that Zoey's mom had been wormed and she assured me she was and that the pups should not have had any worms. Thanks again!! Zoey's mom, Viv |
