Icon2 Dogs Not Allowed

We have had Mya for just over 3 weeks. We have taken her almost everywhere. The Mall, The Doctors, The Dentist, The bowling alley even to restaurants. Even though signs are posted that No Dogs are Allowed and I am aware of health codes. She is so well behaved that we have been asked to bring her back.

Well yesterday I was taking her to see "Grandma". I can't tell you how many people have said that Mya has made thier day and my mother inlaw is not an exception. When dealing with the loss of her daughter a visit from Mya is what my Inlaws need to make them smile. Yesterday the Superintendant for the condo building told me in the elevator that Mya was not welcome in the building, even for a visit. I told her that she does not bark, she is pee pad trained and that you can not hear her run with carpeting on the floors (considering Mya is only close to 3lbs). She said that she didn't care that rules are rules.

When I told my mother inlaw this it looked like someone slapped her face. She had just gone out and bought Mya toys for her visits. I am thinking I am just going have to sneak the dog in. Yes my inlaws could come to visit us it is just that they like to have us visit as well and bring Mya with us. Mya and I are planning to be part of a registered therapy dog program, I don't know if her becoming a therapy dog will make a difference. I am thinking I will just have to use another carry bag to put Mya in and sneek her in. Thank you for letting me vent and please let me know if you have come across this same problem for visiting people in condos or places that dogs are not welcome and what you did.
Thinking that Paris Hilton's Tinkerbell seems to get to go EVERYWHERE

I'm so sorry Cyn

All I can really say is people don't understand what spending and sharing your life with a dog and especially a yorkie is all about.

I know until Jerry was in my life I didn't.

I think once Mya is a therapy dog or an aid ( I think thats what you call them) the superintendent cannot say anything because she serves a purpose. They cannot tell a blind person that thier dog is not allowed in so they cannot tell you that either b/c she is going there for your inlaws therapy Right?
What a jerk she is being. I would just sneak her in if she makes your inlaws that happy. Happiness is so worth it its the best medicine and being able to see them smile!!

Yes, it does make a difference. It is illegal to ask someone with a service dog to leave - unless (I think) the dog is not behaving. Ask Kim (SoCalYorkiLvr) she has posted about this and can give you more information.
One of the sites she posted a link to offers laminated cards that seem to make a big difference when you run into someone that wants to give you a hard time.

very well put ! Thats what they are sevice dogs and it is legal. I just learned all about it in realestate class. They told us that if it is a service dog than it is allowed wherever the person goes

Default Do it anyway!

Well, I may be causing trouble here.........but I say get one of those carriers that look like purses and sneak her in. Who cares what that person says? Of course once she is a service dog, you won't have to worry about that, but for now, what the superintendent doesn't know won't hurt her. What happens in the in laws condo.......stays in the inlaws condo. LOL.

,,,I take my Comet everywhere too, Barnes and Nobles bookstore is one of his favorite places. He is almost 6 months and he is 7 pounds. I have a great SHERPA carrier for him. As cute and loveable as my dog is, it's nobody's business what I carry in my purse, and as tempting as it is for me to show him off, I keep him zipped up and comfortable in his carrier. Most of the time in public places, people never even notice him because, I try to be discreet about carrying him into public places.

This way, no one is offended, and everyone minds their own business. If your yorkie brings alot of joy to your mom, don't let anything stop you from bringing your dog for visits. Just be discreet about it.

SHERPA bags look like large handbags that are pretty CHIC!

I agree with everyone else! Sneak her in. I would probably do that anyway, but since she is such good therapy for your mom, it's a must that they see each other! Also, if she's a service dog, he cannot turn you away! Good luck and best wishes to you and your mom...amazing what these little fur balls can do for one's state of mind!

Thank you to all of you. I will sneak her in and perhaps get a patch or something for back up until she is officially registered as a therapy dog when she turns one year old.
I forgot to mention that she was asked to come to the seniors coffee morning club in that building two weeks prior. Nothing was said to me or my mother in-law at that time. Ohhhhhhhh well, live and learn

I did a little research on this....

By law, per the American's with Disabilities Act (ADA) they can't ask you what your disability is or ask you to provide prook that your dog is a Service Animal. All they can ask is what your dog is trained to do.

It's not that you have to show proof, it's just that people with disabilities have written that when they show the card people stop hassling them. It makes it a little easier to deal with people who don't know the law.

I did some research and I have another program that will take Mya before she is a year old. I can get her Therapy Dog In Training Patches. As well a as a cute patch that says "I am friendly you can pat me" I looking to the law here and it states that a therapy dog has more restrictions than a service dog for "public" places. But if I were to Mya to a private residence in a condo building that does not allow dogs she would be allowed it. Taking her to restaurants is always a risk but so far at the 5 she has been to, she has been fine. Something else caught my eye in my search. Service Dogs for those with depression. I may enquire in to that program. There was a group of teenagers waiting for a coffee sporting gothic makeup, spike mohawks, and such.
I thought they were a cute crowd although some fear them. Anyway I notice the boy with mohak lost his place in a very long line up to get coffee to see Mya. She was in her bag. He said they kicked out the pet store in the mall because of the way they look and that they knew they will never let them hold a puppy at the pet store.
I looked at this boys face and how wide his eyes were to even get a glims at Mya.
So I unzipped the bag and put her in his Arms. He was so overwhelmed with emotion.
Kept thanking me. He told me I was a sweet lady to see that all he need to day was a hug from a puppy. Some people warned that Mya would get stolen one day by some one running off with her. I really don't think they would get too far with her as even the security guards like her. The best think I have gotten from little Mya in the gift of sharing, if only for a few minutes. To talk to strangers and generally be more friendly.
I am even thinking that If I do breed Mya will donate a puppy for the disablities service dog training.
