| Please help!! I have been battling dry skin on my Yorkie forever now it seems. I have taken the advice of YTalkers and put her on Missing Link, have been adding salmon oil to her food, changed her food, gotten a humidifier, and nothing seems to help. I know a lot has to do with this time of year, and will prob end up taking her to the vet for allergy tests...but I really need some shampoo that I can bathe her in to soothe the itching for her. Any ideas?? Please help!! |

| You really should not be using the Salmon Oil AND Missing Link at the same time. You should pick one or the other. Second, what food are you feeding her? If it contains corn, wheat, soy, beef, dairy, barley, or rye, you need to switch foods. I suggest Canidae All Life Stages or Life's Abundance. Those are the only 2 foods I have found that do not contain any of these problematic ingredients. Thirdly, how often are you bathing her? If her skin is really that dry, she should only be getting a bath every 2 weeks...waiting longer will only help, but I would NOT give her a bath more often than every 2 weeks. Use an Oatmeal Shampoo. Try spraying some Emu Oil on her skin after a bath and try letting her air dry rather than blow dry. Put a towel in the dryer and wrap her up in that after a bath until she is dry so she doesn't catch cold. Lastly, you need to brush her everyday, at least once a day. Brushing stimulates the oil glands in her skin and will help with the dry skin. |

| Dog Handlers who do dog shows swear by Bo Derek's line, Bless the Beasts, shampoos and conditioners. And our trainer said that dogs should only be bathed about once a month. For me, that seems a long time, so I compromise between one month and 2 weeks. She said that if you do it more often, you are robbing your dog of his/her natural oils. |

| Hi How long have you been using the Missing Link and other stuff? It takes weeks to see a difference, that's why I ask.

| I hardly bathe her at all because I know it is not good for their skin. I was just thinking there might be something out there that could help with her itching |

| I have been using ML for a few weeks now and have read so many opinions on how much to give her daily. I just started giving her fish oil last week, only a few times a week and the food I switched her from was Nutro Max to Nutro Ultra because the Max contained corn. I am trying to be the best mom I can, but nothing seems to work. |

| First and foremost...what food are you using? Second...Missing Link has been known to make some dogs itch more...including my Jo-Jo and several others here on YT. Third...Have you had her to the vet to rule out bacterial infection, mites, fleas, etc...? If you have your dog on a good food that does not contain corn or other known allergens then there are a couple other things you can do. My 2 boyz have different coat types...Riley is pretty normal but Jo gets oily a few days after a bath...I bathe them both once a week, unless Jo needs it in between. I have noticed that if he eats an oily food he gets oily pretty quick. Anyway, the vet gave me a medicated shampoo for Jo called Pyoben, it contains Benzoyl Peroxide and it is an Antimicrobial, Keratolytic, follicular Flushing Shampoo...it cleans the hair follicles. This shampoo has to be left on for 10 or 15 minutes which can be hard on both of you but worth the trouble if it helps. I also bought a shampoo at PetSmart called *efa HyLyt shampoo with *Essential fatty acids. It is a soap-free, Hypoallergenic shampoo for routine cleansing of normal, dry or sensitive skin. I use the second shampoo on both of my boys and it works well. I make sure to get between their toes, in their armpits and the underbelly and rinse, rinse, rinse when you're done. This shampoo really seems to help Jo, he licks his feet but not so much with this one. This time of year is hard on everyone, dry skin is hard to get rid of in humans and animals. I used to use DermCaps from PetSmart to put over their food and that helped too. I hope something in all of that helps and you find some relief for your baby! | A couple of questions then. First, "what" are you feeding her? Second, "what" are you using to bathe her in? Third, if she's wearing shirts, coats or pj's, "what" material are they and what are you useing to wash her clothes and bedding in? |

| I just looked at the ingredients for Nutro Ultra and they all seem good, so keep her on that. I would stop the Missing Link and just stick with the fish oil and change shampoos to one of the ones mentioned for dry skin. And try to keep baths to once a month, if possible. |

| Thank you so much for all your replies..my whole family makes fun of me for being on YT all the time, but I wouldn't know what to do with Reese if it wasn't for you guys!! HyLyt shampoo with *Essential fatty acid is the one that I have been using on her. My vet gave it to me when I first got Reese. So you think take her off the ML? And how much salmon oil should I be giving her?? It's so frustrating....I am going to call the vet tomorrow and see if I can get her in, just to see what the deal is with allergies. Does that sound like a good idea, or should I wait it out a little longer? And one more question, when I am done with this bag of Nutro, should I try the canidae?? I have read a lot of good reviews on it. |

| I highly recommend the Shea Pet shampoo line that Jennie (sassypup.net) offers on her site. There are two versions of the shampoo, both gentle, but there is an extra gentle formula. The shampoo contains shea butter as well as oatmeal and essential oils to calm the skin. There is also a spray Herbal Moisturizing Treatment that acts as a conditioning spray for the days in-between bathing that also has calming features and there is a balm (I dont' know if Jennie sells that) that is specifically for hot spots and such. I just switched over to these products and simply can't say enough great things about how it has so quickly enhanced the texture of their coats. If the food is good and you are using Missing Link, I would look to your grooming products next. Maybe she needs to be bathed more often rather than infrequently. Hope this helps. BTW, Jennie (SassyPup) was offering shampoo/conditioner samples as well - there is a thread on it....

| Both my dogs are eating Nature's Variety Dog food. Here is the link:http://www.naturesvariety.com/ It has been good for Bailey who has a sensitive tummy and allergies to grains and it keeps their poop firm. Go to your local pet store, (not petco/petsmart) and ask for a sample. Nature's Variety will send you some samples also if you call them. Bailey's vet told me not to give her missing link because she says she has seen allergy's from that. Take care,
