| Well, it was pretty easy, though time consuming. I may have gone overboard This is what I did: Slowly simmer 3 lbs boneless skinless chicken breast in 3 cups free range chicken broth for about 30 minutes. Remove the chicken and save the juice from it. Measure out 2.25 cups of the juice (it came out to exactly that ) and add 1 cup brown rice, cook according to directions. In the meantime, while these were cooking, I had 1 cup split peas simmering with some fresh rosemary from my garden. I pureed that in a food processor. I also lightly steamed a large sweet potatoe, 1 cup baby carrots, 1 cup chopped broccoli, 2 cups spinach and one whole bunch of fresh asparagus, just the top halves. Toss that all in there with the shredded chicken, a 16 oz container of cottage cheese, and 4 hard boiled Eggland's best eggs, shells and all, ground up. They LOVE this OMG I love making them so happy I hope that they'll still eat their kibbles I did add a 1/2 Pet tab vitamin with their dinner tonight. Plus some plain yogurt and the Missing Link, it's like a doggy feast. Next thing is the beef version. I am thinking of using barley, lentils, green beans, carrots and sweet potato, with cottage cheese and eggs again. That recipe above made 16 cups It should last a while, since they only get 1/4 cup twice a day of this, mixed with their kibbles. It smells a heck of a lot better than the canned food. Luna's face got so stinky with the canned,no matter how much I wash her face, she REEKS I hope that this will help Aren't ya glad you asked now?

| The food sounds good but I have one suggestion. You might want to call either Missing Link or the Pet Tabs company and see if their supplements are complete...you don't want to give too many and over supplement. I'm feeding my boyz Nature's Variety raw diet right now but I've considered a switch over to raw meat and the rice/veggie combination. They do love the cooked or raw foods so much better than the commercial stuff. |

Thanks Teri, can't be too careful! I did read the labels and I'm fairly sure that they offer different things, but I will double check that Here's Missing Link: The Missing Link Canine Plus™ formula ingredients: flax seed, glucosamine sulfate, blackstrap molasses, freeze dried liver, rice bran, primary dried yeast, sunflower seed, dehydrated alfalfa, dried carrot, freeze dried bone, dried fish meal, freeze dried oyster, sprouted green barley, dried kelp, lecithin, garlic, and yucca schidigera extract. Unopened, the shelf life is 2 years if kept in a cool, dry place. After opening, refrigerate unused product, and use the contents within 90 days. And Pet Tabs: Pet Tabs Ingredients: Wheat Germ, Kaolin, Corn Syrup, Pork Liver Meal, Dicalcium Phosphate, Sucrose, Lactose, Safflower Oil, Gelatin, Corn Starch, Stearic Acid, Niacinamide, Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein, Iron Oxide And Peptone, Magnesium Stearate, Dl-Alpha Tocopheryl Acetate, Vitamin A Acetate, Zinc Oxide, Riboflavin, Thiamine Mononitrate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Cyanocobalamin, Manganese Sulfate, Copper Acetate Monohydrate, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Cobalt Sulfate. What do you think, can you decipher if these are repeating each other? Now I'm worried

| I've never been good at figuring out the ingredients in things but they don't look the same. If you're worried maybe give ML one day and Pet Tabs the next...that way you won't give too much of anything. |

| Yeah, it's confusing! Although, the Pettabs seems to be a vitamin/mineral supplement, while the MissingLink is more a fiber/omegas superfood type thing. I will email both companies and ask if it's okay for them to take both. See what they say I'll ask the vet too.

No Longer a Member | It sounds really yummy, but when I run the numbers, it comes out really low in fat and calcium. I get 4g fat per cup and only 61 mg calcium per cup (that doesn't count whatever calcium/nutrients are in the vitamin or the missing link). I use Mastercook, which has an entire nutrition database in it, and it is really great for analyzing the nutrition in recipes. At the bottom of the recipe, it shows some of the nutrition. It doesn't export the entire panel, but the calcium came out at 61mg per cup. I did some searching and found that adult dogs need 54mg of calcium per pound of body weight daily, and puppies need 145mg calcium per pound of body weight daily. So my Chloe is a 4lb puppy, she would need almost 600mg of calcium per day. The fat would be really easy to add, with one of those good oils that is good for coat, but the calcium seems harder to get. Anyway, here's what I get with mastercook. * Exported from MasterCook * Dog food 2 Recipe By : Serving Size : 16 Preparation Time :0:00 Categories : Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method -------- ------------ -------------------------------- 3 pounds boneless skinless chicken breast 3 cups chicken stock 1 cup brown rice 1 cup split peas 1 tablespoon fresh rosemary sprigs 1 large sweet potato 1 cup baby carrots 1 cup chopped broccoli 2 cups spinach 12 asparagus spears 16 ounces cottage cheese 4 large eggs, hard-boiled Yield: "16 cups" - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Per Serving (excluding unknown items): 247 Calories; 4g Fat (13.4% calories from fat); 30g Protein; 22g Carbohydrate; 4g Dietary Fiber; 105mg Cholesterol; 602mg Sodium. Exchanges: 1 Grain(Starch); 3 1/2 Lean Meat; 1/2 Vegetable; 0 Fat. I hope you don't mind my looking this up. The last time I ran the numbers, I think it made some people mad . I have always wanted to try feeding my super picky dog homemade food, but I'm so afraid that it won't be nutritionally complete. Misty |
