Yorkie Yakker | Change in Behavior Hi, I had a dog that behaved that way a long time ago. I had a traumatic change in circumstance that I guess my dog sensed. I can only recommend watching the Dog Whisperer on the National Geographic channel. His advice has helped me and my family keep our position as pack leader in our house with our two dogs. I'm an avid Cesar fan because back when I had the behavior issue with my other dog, I hired a dog psychologist/trainer who did nothing like what the Dog Whisperer teaches. And to think I wasted a few hundred bucks thinking my dog was hopeless. P/S- speaking of becoming the pack leader, I made sure both dogs submitted to my cockatoo. She will climb off her perch and make her way across the kitchen floor, completely ignoring both dogs to climb up my leg (yes, very needy). Xena and Gigi just look at her befuddled. They don't seem to know what to make of my bird. |

| Normally, she is so well behaved. Even with barking, all I have to say is "No Barking!" and she will stop. Maybe I should have mentioned that there aren't a lot of visitors because all my friends work during the day and are at home with their hubbies at night. I live alone and it has pretty much been her and me since I got her. I also work at home so she is accustomed to having me to herself all the time. I do take her out with me frequently and 'out there' she isn't so aggressive like that. |

| Do you have any idea when this behavior started? Is there a trigger Day? Why don't you try putting a harness and leash on her in the house when you know someone is coming over? That way you'll have some control over her to protect her as well as your visitor, or just put her away in another room when somebody comes to the door. You can try telling her NO! and squirt her with a small spray of water from a water bottle, give her a treat when she listens. I make Bailey sit before opening our door. Last summer my daughter was supposed to be spending the night at a friends house & about 11:30 pm the phone rang, by the time I reached for it (I was sleeping) they hung up, about 5 min later Bailey started whining so I got out of bed picked her up, went to open our bedroom door when I saw two dark figures walking down our very long hallway with a flashlight. I screamed, slammed the door and was running for the phone, my husband jumped out of bed ready to protect us, when I heard my daughter's voice saying it was her and her friend. The dog was shaking and peed down my side..yes, lovely..I was scared to death, there was not supposed to be anyone else home but my hubby, me and Bailey. Anyway my daughter's excuse for her foolishness was she didn't want to wake us up but wanted a couple of movies to watch. ANYWAY Bailey was for months scared everytime I picked her up to carry her out of our bedroom in the dark...She barks and growls at every little thing trying to protect me. It has been months but we are slowly getting her over this behavior, she only barks at night now when the kids try to sneak in late..

| Please forgive me but I found that story to be quite hilarious. It was a good one. I don't know when it happened. Maybe she is trying to protect me. I tried to calm her, and then I put her on the floor thinking that if she just got her sniffing done she would calm down. NOT!! I picked her right back up because I feared she was going to attack the woman. Fortunately, the visitor was unpreturbed. After all, she is so tiny (but her teeth are still sharp, eh?) I put her in my room and she continued to bark voraciously until I let her out when the woman was gone and she figured out there was no one here. Tell me more stories! I loved the last one. |

I think that because you are alone, Sassy is protecting you. Yorkies are loyal protectors. Maybe she sensed something about the lady she didn't like?! Have a good night, I have to go to bed here in a minute! Take care,
