I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Emergency Room Visit! About 4 pm Friday Joey, who is 24 weeks old, vomited up some food. I didn't think too much of it, because this has happened twice before, but in the past involved car rides. About 5 minutes after the initial vomiting he did it again, and then 1 minute later he vomited again. I called the vet, and the receptionist said only 1 doctor was in, and the vet techs were busy, but she'd call back as soon as possible. In the 20 minutes that I waited for her call, Joey vomited 6 more times; it ranged from a teaspoon to a tablespoon and was yellow and foamy. He has never suffered from hypoglycemia, but I checked his gums, and they were pink and when pressed turn white and back to pink, which is a sign hypoglycemia, isn't present. I rubbed a little Karo syrup on the roof of his mouth, just in case. I finally called the vet back, and she said that she had been unable to ask anybody, it was 4:20 at this time and suggested I take him to emergency hospital. He vomited 4 more times before we left and twice in the car on the way to hospital. Once there, he was checked by a tech and we waited 3 hours before we got to see a doctor. When the tech weighed Joey he only weighed 3 lb 8 ounces, this astounded me because I though Joey weight was closer to 3lb 14 ounces. In this period, he only vomited twice, but had terrible amounts of saliva coming out of his mouth. Finally, when we were able to see doctor she suggested a Parvo test and a fluids test. Parvo was negative, and test showed he was slightly dehydrated. They treated Joey by giving him fluids, anti-vomiting medication and allergy meds. The doctor had no idea what caused this and thought maybe he was allergic to something, perhaps an insect bite. She suggested we give him Benedryl and Pepcid today. Joey seems better today, no more vomiting, and he had a normal bowel movement, but I'm totally confused about what could have caused this. Does anybody have any ideas? If this happen again, should I just wait the 3 hours at home, and see if the vomiting stops? How do you know when to see the doctor? I am so worried this will happen again since we have no idea what caused it. Are there other tests that I should ask his regular vet to do?

| Your baby injested something he shoudn't. I don't know how you have your home set up. Does he have access to cleaning items, bleach and the like under any sink? Maybe he could have eaten a spider. Some will make a dog very, very sick. You may want to do a thorough search and do some *kid-proofing* around the house. I do hope he will be ok, poor little munch. |

| It is scary when they throw-up and yours certainly did throw up quite a bit. You did the right thing by taking him to the Doggy ER. I'm not sure about the vet not calling back as I've never had this problem...mine has always called back w/in an appropriate amount of time after I've called. I guess you just have to go with your instincts..you know your dog best. I'm assuming the Doggy ER is open 24/7? If so that's a comfort knowing that at any point if you decide to you can go. I think if they vomit once or twice you really don't need a vet call. If they continue to like your Joey did by all means call the vet. If they are going downhill quickly and you haven't heard from your vet then get him to the Doggy ER. Hope this helps and i'm so happy Joey is doing better.....Take Care |

| Hi, so sorry your little one wasn't feeling well. I hope you find out what caused this.

| I think you did the right thing with your baby. It would be a good idea to keep some Nutrical on hand for hypoglycemia, as it has many added nutrients in it. Another thing to keep on hand is Pedialyte (non-flavored) to help with dehydration since this almost always happens with lots of vomiting and well as diarrhea. If your pup won't just drink it, use a syringe and squirt it down the throat. They can lose several ounces quickly with the loss of body fluids. There are many times we just don't know why our little ones get sick. Dehydration can take a little one down very quickly, so that is really the urgency in seeking treatment. A sub-cutaneous fluid injection can do wonders very quickly. I wasn't aware of the spider thing either, but I do know that picking up a toad in their mouth causes the toad to secret poisons and make them VERY ill. Sissy has first hand experience in that department!! Hope Joey is all better really soon. Sissy sends hugs his way!!

I had to give him Benadryl and Pepcid today, and I guess the Benadryl made him sleepy, cause right after that, he conked out. The vet suggested children's liquid, but it was really hard for him to take and he started the gagging reflex again, but didn't vomit. It's just so scary, it like he was fine one minute and seriously ill the next.

I know what you mean about fine one minute and seriously ill the next. It can come on quite suddenly, particularly if it is from something ingested. And definitely very scary!! These little ones always keep us on our toes!!!
