My 16 month old yorkie weighs in over 7lbs. The breeder I got her from tells me she has never had a puppy over 5lbs and that I should put her on a diet! She's not fat she's just tall! And she gets plenty of excercise! So glad we are not alone!!

Ahhhh, so many people say that the breeder they got their puppy from always promises that it's going to be a miniature this or that. And then the dog winds up being larger than they promise. 'Get on a diet' is her defense for your doggie being so called oversized. Too much!!

I submit we need to think of ourselves as fabulous dogs, instead of accepting second hand citizenship due to our size. Yes, teapot pride. We need a parade and a flag lol!! I find that Miles is more durable and versatile at his size. He was never intended to be a fashion accessory. Small enough to get into a doggie purse, large enough to be healthy and strong!!

I chose to get an older Yorkie already fully grown because I was seeking a teapot specifically.

You would be surprised how many people have the same thing happen to them. While Yorkies are not supposed to be over 7lbs their ancestors were quite a bit larger for many years. In a well bred line of Yorkies they may have occasional puppies that are over sized. However, there are also the racketeers out there that know there is a big market for small dogs and will tell their customers that the puppy is going to be under 7lbs when they know very well it will not. Unless you are buying from a breeder that has some nice line bred dogs that have been consistently producing a particular size pup there is just no way someone can guarantee you a particular sized dog. It takes very careful breeding to maintain a consistent look and size in purebred dogs.

The teapots make wonderful family pets. Too bad not enough people appreciate them for the beauties they are.

Just thought I'd mention...

I took My Female Becca to the Vet yesterday for a checkup, and She weighed in at 8.3 lbs ! What a little Fuzwhopper she's going to be.

I sincerely think that a higher level of exercise (which both of mine get daily) has an impact on how much they grow. Both Her and Sneakers parents are within normal specs and Becca (when born) was not an exceptionally large puppy. It may vary with another animal ?

Nice! And thanks for reporting all official weigh-ins to the Teapot Club. We have standards, you know!

I've often wondered how exercise affects weight in dogs. Jillie, at 5 1/2 pounds, weighs more than her Mom or her dad, and I'm relatively certain she gets a lot more exercise than they did. I don't know about Eddie's parents, but he's been no lighter than 9 1/2 pounds since he was a year old. He's just under 10 now.

Muscle mass weights more than fat in the same mass.

I'm sure that lots of exercise will help develop more muscle mass in any dog. It certainly helps to keep to keep them from getting overweight.

During the coldest part of our last winter Gracie did not get to go out for her walks everyday and she ended up being a bit of a porker by spring time. We started back to our regular routine of at least two walks a and sometimes 3. The extra weight fat dropped off quickly. She just loves her outdoor time.

We got her from a rescue home at 4 months so really don't know anything about her background but she has proved to be the sweetest little dog you could ever meet.

I LOVE HER!!! Miles is a year old now and I know he's about 9-10 lbs. could be 12 lbs. for all I know. He has not been weighed by the vet in a while. He feels heavier. But, you know, he feels good in my arms, like a human infant would. I don't plan to have any children so this is as good as it gets. He's strong enough not to be so fragile but small enough that I can still take him places and carry him in his doggie purse or carrier.
