I need advice... I had Max neutered a week and 1/2 ago. When I brought him home, he started going on the paper again - one day he went 5 times, but has skipped an entire day, or only goes once or twice a day on the paper now. He has gone near the paper a few times. He doesn't go outside - he's paper trained. He was only marking for about 3 weeks (I think!) before he was neutered. He's 7.5 months old. He was also sick for with diarrhea and he threw up a couple of days ago. He seems a little tired too, so I'm leaving him alone right now. If I see him marking, I soak it up on his pee pad and tell him that's where he's supposed to make peepee, etc. - that's the same way I originally trained him. l also make the usual fuss and do the happy dance and song when he does go on the paper, treats are given and you'd think he was a genius, who just got a scholarship to Harvard. I called the vet and she said not to worry -- that it takes time and it can take up to 3 months for the testosterone to leave his system entirely. I do feel that I have to keep after him because it can become behavioral real fast. I was spraying all the places he could mark, including the floors, every morning (before coffee!) with Nature's Miracle and Bitter Apple. That seemed to be helping, but I took off Sunday and Monday morning. Mistake! I don't want to start with a belly band yet because, for one thing, I'm hoping not to need to use it - that he'll miraculously stop soon. I also don't want to irritate him since he was neutered not even 2 weeks ago. It was easier to train him - he was 100% (or 98% - good enough) paper trained before he started marking. I knew where he was going. Now, I can't keep up with his "mistakes" bcause I don't know where they are. Any suggestions? Thanks, Judy Last edited by judyeve; 01-09-2007 at 12:21 PM.

Hey Judy!! I definitely do NOT recommend belly band. I used it on Wookie and it only made the problem worse, because it was easier for him to do it without me noticing. What I did when this happened was put Wookie on a leash and tie it to the coffee table or by the doggie door or whereever i was at. I put two leashes together so he had room to run around. This way, no matter what, he was always pretty close to me and knew i was watching. He tried to mark once, and I made a HUUUGEEE fuss and yelled really loud and then took him immediately outside.. and honestly.. he stopped after that. Since he has been potty trained, he knows what to do and what NOT to do, so he's marking when you're not looking, or when he thinks he can get away with it, so try to make it where you can watch him all the time, and he KNOWS that you're two feet away no matter what. Good luck!!

Dear Dena: How long did it take after he was neutered using the leashes? Max is going on the paper I think because I've been finding wet spots around the paper or on the edge. I think he's picking up his leg and tryijng the use the paper at the same time. Men! Thanks for the advice. What did you do with him at night? How's the baby? By the way, LOVE this computer. Love ya, Judy

Hey Judy, Wookie was on the leash about 4-5 months. Mainly because he is a crazy off the wall boy and I was so scared that he would go back to his old ways. after 3-4 weeks we extended his leash and after about 2 months we started letting him have "free time". But if he started going crazy we put him back on the leash, and he pretty much started understanding. But he got the potty training down pretty dang quick.. i'd say a good 3-4 weeks and he got it down. We kept him on it for more reasons than that. I still take wook out to potty randomly, just so he always knows that I am re-informing him that I always expect him to go outside to potty. Wookie sleeps in a crate at night, because when they sleep with you in the bed, they think that they are equal to you, when they are not. You are the master. Plus, wookie would jump off, pee and jump back in bed. But now if he needs to go, he whines at night... i dont get up rigth away, I tell him "shhh" or "be quiet", if he doesn't stop after a couple times then you know it's because he needs to potty. If he does stop, then he's just being a butt. This is stuff i got straight from my trainer. I rave about him allll the time because he did such a great job.
