Shirley - if you go, also get a map and mark out your routes to and from, so if you need a cab you will know if they take you for a longer ride. Not all will do this, just be prepared. We had a cabby that tried. And if you get caught in traffic - you can get out of the cab if you wish and walk if not far. You do not have to take a cab from point a to b.

Shirley, If you go, I'd love to meet you and you're welcome to come along with us to do whatever we have planned. We usually do canal street for shopping the day before the specialty, do a Broadway show, dinner and a little site seeing. None of our group is showing in Westminster, so we have a little more time. If you're attending PM me and I'll give you my cell # so that we can hook up, that is if you'd like.

If you look around $1,000-$1,500 or more is what the going rate is for a yorkie that is bought from a BYB or a Puppy Mill.


This is really NOT the case. It depends on what part of the country you live in. I paid 700 for Diesel. His breeder has only gone up 100 dollars. It is very possible to get a very healthy dog that does not cost an arm and a leg. Very Possible. I also think the "going rate" is just nuts. Why is the cost for Yorkies sky high compared to other small dogs.. It is becuase there is a demand for them and breeders know this. Just for the record... I don't liked to be controled when it comes to certain things. This is one of them.

You have to do what you think is right. I have the freedom of shoppig elsewhere.

Emmsmom - I went to check out prices in your area to see what they were. And yes - you can get yorkies in your area for 600. - 1500 for CKC (Continental) registered pups. From what I saw. Yet, AKC were going from 1,000 - 3,000 for pets. So not only the area may effect price, but especially the registration that is used.
I think this is where the problem layed with out conversation. We were comparing apples and oranges - not the same. I was speaking about AKC registered prices. CKC pups on an avaerage will usually sell for less, since their registration is not as strong as AKC. Unfortunatly many Puppy Mills and some BYB have gone with CKC since it is easier or they were denied to registered with AKC due to problems with paperwork, etc... CKC is not large enough to do home visits. I am not saying all pups from CKC are from puppymills - just that puppymills have gone to this registry as well as other new ones.

Totally agree with you. But, I've also found that most BYB will sell their puppies with full registration, I know, I bought my pet yorkie from one. It just so happened I just wanted a pet and had her spayed anyway. Today, I am amazed how easily I walked away with a puppy. Just gave her the money ($600.00 5 years ago) and no questions asked. Granted I had no contract and/or guarantee. I was lucky she's had no major health issues. I've learned alot since then.

Not everyone advertises. I know of several breeders whose dogs have champions in their bloodlines and they don't charge an arm and leg. Diesel has champions in his bloodline as well. The highest I have seen in MY area is about 1200. Most of the dogs are in the 700-1000 price range. Most of them also only offer limited registration as well. So it IS possible.

Granted I don't like the limitied registration but it isn't that big of a deal. My ORIGINAL question was about the breeder coming to get your dog if you don't have them fixed.

I sold my last litter of pet quality pups for $1000. I have an excellent health guarantee and offer support after the sale. I sold them for cheaper because Roxie has no champion in her 3 generation pedigree but has good lines through Yorkfield and Ju-Gene's. I bred her once because she's a redleg and I wanted to isolate that color gene in a breedable female to deepen the color of my line. The pups were sold with spay/neuter contracts and limited AKC papers. I don't know how easy it would be for a breeder to take back a dog that you failed to fix but if it's in writing you could have a court battle on your hands. The contracts can be hard to enforce and I'm considering having my pups fixed before they leave my home. My only concern is putting them through surgery at such a young age and small size. Have any of you breeders had trouble with having them fixed young?

Mardelin.....what a very nice offer...I I would love to go....it depends on whether my company has their NAtional Sales MTG that weekend.....although, they are in Teaneck, NJ. It would be nice if my meeting ended on Friday, and I could come there on Fri afternoon....I will find out....

It's the weekend before, NY/National YT Specialty is on Friday, Sat & Sunday....Westminster is on Monday & Tuesday.....Feb 9-11th Specialties
Westminster 12 & 13th

It would be great if you could come.....get to meet up with some of the best exhibitor/breeders from all over North America, some from Europe. 3 days of shows; morning, till late afternoon. We fly in on Wed morning, leaves all day Thurs. for playing and Fri, Sat, and Sunday evening for whatever. We also try to do ice skating too at Rockafeller Plaza.
