| My puppy has sarcoptic mange Hi everyone! I never owned a Yorkie before, many dogs, but not a yorkie. I was soooooo excited to get one!!! Well I got my 10 week old puppy and took her to the vet after continually scratching herself to whining! It turns out after having her for 4 weeks, she has sarcoptic mange!!! I was devasted! I am a germ freak, and I have a 16 month old daughter and couldnt/didnt know how to deal with this! Well, she was put on medicine (ivetermicin or something) once a week for 4 weeks, and a special shampoo twice a week. Well she has had 2 doses of meds, and she has no scratching, no scabs or any clinical signs that she had before of the mange. My vet doesnt want to see her for another 2 weeks. It is killing our family to see her in "isolation" like this. She just cries and whimpers. My question to anyone who has had experience. Do you think after 2 doses and no clinical signs it is safe to play with her and have contact with her again other than putting her out to go to the bathroom. I have been washing her bedding every night and taking every precaution I have read about on the internet to prevent it from spreading to my family or to continue to get worse on my puppy. Thanks!!! Shena is her name |

| Being a puppy, she really needs to have some "people" contact. Call the vet and ask, but I would think that if she has been on meds for a few days she should be fine to get out hold. Socialization is so important when they are puppies. |

| We had a beagle with this once and had to have him neutered. It is also called 'red mange" and is an inherited mange. I would be talking to the breeder if I were you. As far as your family catching it, idon't think they can. poor baby. Did your vet tell you to put her in isolation? |

| We went through this with our first Yorkie too but we were never told to put him in isolation. If this is what she has, the mange that is inherited can't be passed on and you can't catch it from them...believe me...been there, lived through it, never got it! We did have Boog neutered though so it wouldn't be passed on to any offspring. Good luck with your little girl! |

| I hate to hear when puppies have to be uncomfortable and suffer, I know it's what's best for you family if the vet said to isolate her. Like Sugar's mom said, you should talk to the person who sold her to you.

| Yes my vet told me that sarcoptic mange is VERY contagious.. and she was extremely worried because I had a baby in the house. I just feel awful!!!! We have another dog also a yorkie-poo who also was put on the meds, but she said no isolation was necessary yet because he wasnt showing any clinical signs. My concern is about the "socialiation" also! I mean for the 4 weeks that we didnt know she had this... she was our baby, just playing with everyone, curling up with us, etc.. and now she just looks at me like "what did I do??" I just feel totally awful! I mean she isnt scratching anymore, her scabs are gone everything! She does have flaky skin, but I dont think thats from the mange. I did call the breeder also. He said of course "none of the other puppies have it!" The vet said he would propably deny it.... My poor puppy just breaks my heart!!! |

| Chachi had this. Yes it can be passed from dog to humans in the form of scabies. My vet didnt tell me that I found out by reading about it later. Since the vet didnt tell us we needed to we did not isolate Chachi. Knowing what I do now I probably would have because I have a 6 yr old in the house. I would talk to your vet and see if its okay for your kids to be handeling him. Since he is clearing up he most likely does not have anymore live mites.

| Boog had the form that lives in the blood...is that demodectic or sarcoptic? Whichever one he had it wasn't contagious. |

| Chachi, how long did it take for the sarcoptic mange to clear up??? Do you remember if it took the whole treatment? Shena's meds are for 4 weeks. She has had 2 doses and seems fine already.... just wondering.... Since you didnt put him in isolation from the family, do you think this is really THAT catchy???? |

| Yes I think it is very catchy now that i have read about it. Not too long ago My Daughters school sent home a flyer that scabies were going around the school and that children can get it from their pets. Chachi was never on that medication. He was dipped in a strong solution he was suposed to be diped 6 times but we stopped the treatment after 5 times because he was getting so sick from it. We had another Vet do a skin scape and he was clear of mites. I didnt know that medication was available or that is how I would have had him treated because he went through hell. I changed Vets because of it

| My gut is...... Get online and do a search.......you can actually find out more info than we can offer you.......probably as much as the Vet knows........this makes me very upset that if it is an inherited gene....then the breeder should know this and/or be made aware of this........ I feel so bad for you and both of your babies......they deserve to be together.....puppy to human..... Let me know if you want me to help you look anything up....... |

| Thanks for the offer to look things up. Actually that is all I have been doing for the past 2 weeks since she was diagnosed. I have found out a lot, but havent gotten to talk to anyone that has gone through it and could give me some words of advice/wisdom. I guess I am searching for the "ultimate" cure... and for this period to be over with! My vet did say that the dips are very harmful to animals, so they dont do those or recommend those. This medicine is supposed to be very helpful even from what I read on the internet. I just want to hold my puppy and was wanting to see if anyone had any experience with this. the other kind of mange demodentic is not contagious.. that is the one that is heridatary... and from what I read that is harder to get rid of.. stress can be bring it on, in the bloodlines, etc... One good thing about the sarcoptic I guess.... |

| My baby has sarcoptic dear all, I have a girl yorkie named Happy, and she got diagnosed 4-5 weeks ago that she has sarcoptic. They have started the Ivermectin as weekly and a body wash treatment paralel. But it did not get well. she is still scratching like crazy and Vet has raised the frequency of ivermectin to once in every two days!!! Still not much wellness but slow... What i will ask is, i dont like my 10 months baby has that much medication. (even though i got her tested last week and her blood tests seems fine, i am worried about long term issues) Does anyone have any idea on the sideeffects of this medicine on yorkies/dogs??? Many thanks in advance |
