*** My Yorkie is 12 pounds - a whooping 12 pounds - and he is still very small (yes he is!). I have grown to really love his size. And, you can't believe how many people who know him want one the exact same size that he is. He is a delightful, healthy, friendly, loveable, affectionate little pet. I couldn't have asked for more. And - I am being truthful when I say, he is still a very little dog. He just isn't very big at all!

It's funny that we want to discount the price of a Yorkie that is larger than 7 pounds -- but turn around and charge more for a little Yorkie that is smaller than 5 pounds........ what's wrong with this picture!

I agree, I've commented on that before too.

How many times are people willing to pay more to get less, except for yorkies.

However, I do fine it refreshing to find someone who is concerned about the health problems of a "small" 5 to 6 pound yorkie. After having so many people reject the "large" 5 to 6 pounders in favor of the tiny ones.

It just goes to show you, size is all relevant.

Or competition dog. No need to be "just" a pet because she's over standard.
Wanted to throw that in there, because I'm an exhibitor and am all for encouraging people to show their dogs-it's not just all about conformation ladies! Even if she's spayed, there are TONS of things you can still do to get yourself in the ring and have fun.

They use to have shows here Cape Girardeau Missouri..
I was going to go this year to watch..but they stopped for some reason.

Question: when people say the little ones have health problems they're talking about the little pups that become little adults right? Pups naturally need extra care right? B/c the little boy i'm looking at is a little under 3 lbs right now. He doesnt look small though and is lively as ever.

Some one asked how a bigger Yorkie could compete. I'm guessing that you could use it in events like agility or something else where they judge the dog on what they can do. Not how they look.

Littlefurbabies, when someone is saying that the little ones have health issues they are talking about little when they are adults. How old is the one you are looking at right now. The rule is take the 8 wk old weight and triple it or the 12wk and double it to get the adult weight.

I think that when some one is buying a pet they need to pick what best fits their needs. But it completely drives me crazy of all the people buying Yorkies (or any other dog) to breed or just breeding their pet if it doesn't fit into the standard. If you aren't picking a Yorkie because it's a Yorkie, meaning it fits into the standards, why get a Yorkie? I'm not just talking about size. There are so many "Yorkies" that don't look like Yorkies. The reason I got a Yorkie was because I love everything about the breed. The silky blue coat, the erect ears, small size. I know that I probably sound like a snob, but when I bought my Yorkies I made sure I knew what their parents looked like so I kindof knew what my babies were going to look like because I wanted a Yorkie that looked like a Yorkie. And I wasn't going to fork out all that money for something that wasn't exactly what I wanted.

Really? OH YEAH! There are TONS of events that you could do w/ a "pet quality" Yorkie! Just for starters, if you're registered w/ the AKC and even if the dog is/isn't neutered/spayed you can compete in Rally Obedience; Obedience; Fly ball; Agility; Tracking....the list goes on. I guess I should start a thread on this sometime. People NEED to know that they're not limited when they hear the negative conotation of "Pet Quality" Yorkie. It really shouldn't be considered a negative, you just shouldn't necc. breed those dogs that's all. Doesn't mean they have to stay at home and do nothing but be cute. Which, no doubt they do well.

Wow $650 would be lower for our area and our prices tend to be lower than everywhere else. I would consider that a really good price for a yorkie no matter what the size

If I'm not mistaken you can compete in those events at AKC shows even if your dog isn't registered with AKC. We were looking at raisig Austrailian Shepards and the majority of the ones are registered with the ASCA. Anyway I checked with AKC and their rules alow non-AKC dogs in non-comformation events.

Yes, you're absolutely right, but this didn't come up necc. during this thread. When I'm able to I'll start a new one regarding the options out there and the regulations of entry for each. I think people in our breed-and others-should be more aware of the competitions available to them.

If you have a dog that "looks" purebred according to the AKC, you can take photos and fill out some easy paper work and submit it to the AKC for what's called an ILP number. Your dog must be neutered if not registered in order to obtain an ILP number and once that's done, you are allowed to compete in Non-Conformation sports within the AKC.

I'd do it w/ your Aussie if it's something that you're interested it.
