Puppy Freedom Piper is now 5 months old. He lives in the laundry room, behind a baby gate when we are not home. His litter box, food, water, crate and toys are all in his room. He doesn't seem to mind his room, but when we are home, of course he loves to be around us. Problem is, he loves to be around us sooo much that we take his baby gate off when he is out to play, and he has never gone in his room for water (after _lots_ of play), or to go potty, without us physically walking him there. He is like a velcro dog. It is a good thing in one respect, since I can watch him like a hawk when he is out, but I want him to not have such anxiety. Any particular training techniques some of you have used to help with this? Thanks!

I didn't have any luck with Misha & anxiety, we ended up getting her a playmate, Piper. The 2 of them are great.

We got Misha in Jan, she was 11 weeks. We got Piper in June, she was 13 weeks. Misha was born in Oct, Piper in March. Their 5 months apart. Misha was almost 8 months when we got Piper. It took a couple of weeks to introduce them, Misha was jealous. They get along great when I have errands to run. Or they play alot when I'm busy doing things around the house. Their is still some jealousy with Misha sometimes, I just tell her to knock it off, & she does.

Piper sounds just like our Cooper, he lives in our laundry room also with food, water, toys, crate etc.... but he is also out in living room with us alot after he goes potty outside. I also noticed he wasn't going into his room often to drink so we placed another bowl of water in the kitchen for him and he uses it often. He has in the last two weeks begun going to his room to eat or drink if he wants to and also to get his toys to bring to us. Guess it just takes time for them to learn.

Maybe you could expand his territory into the kitchen so he can be closer to you, or at least move his food and water and pee pad into the kitchen when you are home. when mine were younger, we had pee pads in every room even though they were only allowed out of the kitchen in the evening when we were watching Tv.

If you get two dogs then I heard to get them close to age and temperment. They get along better that way.

My guy stays in the kitchen/laundry room when I'm at work - but has no problems going in and out of this area when I'm home. Sometimes I think dogs will drink more if we put water right in front of them --but if they have to go someplace to get it --they really just "aren't that thirsty." My dog probably goes in and out of these rooms a lot - because I do when I'm home... Unless he's peeing where he shouldn't - I'm not sure I would worry about this. And, I'm not sure it's "anxiety." These just may be areas he doesn't want to visit when he doesn't have to. There certainly are areas in my house that my dogs don't ever spend time in. Carol Jean
