Animal Smiley 019 Puppy Freedom

Piper is now 5 months old. He lives in the laundry room, behind a baby gate when we are not home. His litter box, food, water, crate and toys are all in his room. He doesn't seem to mind his room, but when we are home, of course he loves to be around us. Problem is, he loves to be around us sooo much that we take his baby gate off when he is out to play, and he has never gone in his room for water (after _lots_ of play), or to go potty, without us physically walking him there. He is like a velcro dog. It is a good thing in one respect, since I can watch him like a hawk when he is out, but I want him to not have such anxiety. Any particular training techniques some of you have used to help with this? Thanks!
