| Question about adding a kitten to the mix? We have a two year old yorkie. My son wants a kitten for christmas. I'm just starting my research before we decide yes or no. Where is the best place to buy a kitten (no I won't buy from a pet store or kitty mills -- I'm sure they exist!). Does anyone else have a yorkie and a cat? How do you get them not to eat each other's food? How do you keep your pup out of the litter box? Do they get along? Our Yorkie is very spoiled, but well behaved, I don't want him to feel displaced by a cat. Also, what about marking, will my Yorkie who was nuetered at 6 months and has never lifted his leg, start marking because there's a cat around? Should we get a male or female? By now you're probably thinking.. hey crazy lady go ask these Q's on a cat forum... so one more Q.. anyone know a good cat forum? Thanks a million in advance Shar-Lee & Finnigen

| My situation is a bit different in that I brought my yorkie puppy into a home with 4 cats. I have had the cats on supervised feeding for years, because one is on a diet. I just feed Gracie in her ex-pen with the door shut. When everyone is done eating and I have picked up the dishes, she is allowed to come out and and have free run of the house as long as I am home. Gracie has been unsupervised (mostly) in the house for a couple of weeks now. She knows where the litter boxes are but so far has not attempted to go into them. I have two and they both have covers on them. One is automated and makes a lot of noise which probably scares Gracie. As far as marking goes, I can't answer that. You might look at yahoo groups for a cat forum to join. I bought all of my cats from responsible breeders, except for one that was a pet store rescue. You might look at the local humane shelter and no-kill shelters. They get kittens fairly often. You can also put the word out among friends, family and co-workers. Some backyard accident might get you a new friend!

| Louie and our cat get along great. They are the best of friends. We do have to keep the cat's food away from Louie. We got our cat when he was very young from our local humane society. Not only did I save a life, but the kittens usually already have their first shots and if they are not already spayed or neutered you can get a voucher to have it done for free. Atleast around here. I don't know about your dog starting to mark, but you do have to be careful of cats marking when they get to that age. Louie does have to be supervised if he is running around free becuase he will get into the litter box, yuck!!! Good luck with whatever you decide.

| We also have two precious kitties (5 years old). We had them before we were blessed with our furbabies. The litterbox is on a shelf in the laundry room where the pups can not get to it and the food is kept up high on top of the dryer so the cats can feed and the pups can not get to the kitties food. The cats do drink from the same bowl as the dogs but I think that is ok, I change the water daily and the cats do leave the dog food alone.... I guess I have no problems having both cats and dogs.

| My Casanova LOVES cats/kittens Not sure about other Yorkies but my little guy is simply in love with felines; recently bottle fed 3 orphaned babies and my 2 year old MALE licked them clean after eating and even stimulated them to potty!! It was the sweetest thing to see...he knew I needed help. He is going to be a father in two weeks, waiting to see if he likes baby puppies as well??? |

| What a geat idea, put the litter box and cat food up high so the cats can get at it but your pup can't. Sounds like most people with both dogs and cats seem to get along. And I really like the idea of checking with the shelter. I'd be happy to save a life! Thanks everyone!

| I agree with the cat sitting idea..just to see how he is around them. Put the cats food up and the litter box, maybe in a room your yorkie doesn't go in to? I believe, correct me if I am wrong, but male cats mark their territory also..ugh..So if it were me, I would go to the animal shelter and pick out a cute girl kitty..LOL I think that most animals can get along together pretty well as long as they are introduced to each other slowly and they each still have their own "space". Especially your yorkie in this case...his house, his family and all that, LOL Let us know what you decide and how you went about it, good luck!

| mine get along great... Tootie LOVES to antagonize Me-Kitty the cat and the cat just tolerates him until he can jump high to get away from him. The only problem we have is that Tootie pins him down and has no idea that he is BIGGER than the cat.. LOL. Hope lovves the cat but is aafraid to get too close.. I dont have a litter box, Me-Kitty is house trained so cant help with that part... Good Luck! I would definitely get a kitty from the Rescue Shelters...

| We had the cats first, we feed the cats and grayson at the same time, but I sit by grayson due to the cats will get into his food, and what he won't eat I have to put up. Grayson has never gotton into the litter box it does have a cover on it. it took us about 3 weeks for the cats to adjust to the new puppy. Good luck!!
