| Hopey is TERRIFIED! Hopey has decided that she is terrified of the car! When we get in the car, she immediately starts crying and shaking... she tries to climb my head... I am ordering her a car seat but I am afraid that she will REALLY freak in that. tonite, when I was a passenger for a change she was not nearly as bad but still cried the whole time. d

| If your car has a console, you should get the console carseat - that way she can be right up by your face, but strapped into the carseat. My guys really like it - and they are kinda nervous when they are just free to roam in the car. But in the console carseat, they must feel more secure and will usually just lay down - yet they are close enough to me to lay their heads on my shoulder if they want. Good luck

| My two dogs ride in the backseat in their carseats and love every minute of it. But - even my little Yorkie was frightened the first few times he rode in the car. So - at first, I had his carseat in the front on the passenger side. Then - most of the time while I drove - I was able to reach over and comfort him and pet him while we drove. We went for short rides at first - only a mile or so - or to the store and back. Also - I deliberately took routes where I could drive slowly - I think this helped him stay calm. And, the breeze from rolled down windows seemed to frighten him a little at first - so we kept the windows up. Sometimes - even a noisy radio can be frightening or confusing for a puppy not used to the car. If your pup seems frightened and wants in your lap - (don't let him in your lap - this will undo everything you're trying to do ) - pet him, comfort him - stay happy, and stay in a good mood (no "poor poor dog" stuff.....). Take him for the short ride and then take him back home and play and have fun. Your pup should overcome his fears if he is taken often for short rides - and realizes that this seems to be a fun thing for you. Also - interestingly - our little guys, even though they are afraid - still would rather go so that they can be with us... and not be left at home. (This works in our favor...) **** I still remember the first time my little pup took a nap in his carseat. I thought, "This is good.....!" Now he sleeps a lot in the car. 1) Keep him in his carseat 2) Short rides at first - very very short, if necessary 3) Take him for rides often 4) Stay positive - don't baby him.... be cheerful 5) Take him back home and play - and stay in that positive happy mood. Good luck! Carol Jean PS: The one thing that made the biggest difference - helping my dogs enjoy riding in the car -- was the fact that I did get them a carseat. Mine are "Lookout seats," and they are up higher, my dogs have a lot of room, they are comfortable, and they can look out the windows and see what's going on in the world. |

| 4 out of 5 dogs of mine love car rides and do so well. They will hop right in the car and will fall asleep and sleep the entire car ride. Destiny does so well with car rides, she goes to sleep right away. Scampers on the other hand is a whole different story. I have had him since March and you would think he would be use to car rides, noooo not him. I go down to my grandma's every 2 weeks to visit, she lives about an hour or more away. Plus I take him with me on short car rides all the time, every chance I get. So Scampers has ridden in the car hundreds of times and have been trying this for months now. Everytime he will shake, pant, whine, become restless and trying to climb everywhere, he is always trying to climb on my head. It is horrible and it really scares me. I am afraid he is going to have a heart attack because he pants so hard and shakes, it is almost like hyperventalating or a panic attack. He has never had a bad experience with car rides so I don't know why he does this. I thought he would get over his fear, but that wasn't going to happen. Anyways I was thinking I was going to have to give him a sedative everytime we traveled, leaving him home is not an option. And then Destiny came in the picture. For some reason, maybe she senses his nervousness, she will lay on Scampers and is actually holding him down. When she does this he calms down right away and goes to sleep and is perfectly happy. I guess you could say she is the cure. This is the only time he is calm, if she is not laying on him he freaks out like he normally does. I think it is really weird, but hey if it works, it works. I wish I could give you advice to help you out but I can't. I do hope that you have more success with Hope than I had with Scampers. I tried everything, made it a positive and very fun experience, didn't baby him or give in and it didn't do any good. Thank goodness Destiny has came along and helped him. Good luck with little Hope!!
