| I took a semester of it in college...years ago..LOL In my class was a woman who was going to get a degree in it at a different college in Ohio..but can't remember which one, I was thinking somewhere around Wilmington, OH, but not positive. Here is a link from the Ohio School for the Deaf that has a bunch of info on it, such as becoming an interpreter and also interpreter training programs...might be useful. http://www.ohioschoolforthedeaf.org/...erpcareer.html

| I wish I could help you... but I can't. I have always wanted to learn sign language. When I worked in Columbus, Ohio as a hair dresser, I had a client the said the only way to learn sign language is to spend, (what they called), a silent weekend. this is where they spend the weekend some place where they are not allowed to talk(verbally). they have to commumicate using sign language only. he said the weekend that he was there he was the only one who could physically hear. It sure sounded like a learning experience to me. maybe if they don't offer one of those around your area, you and your daughter could do the same on your own.

| I jsut had to come back and add this ......so funny..... I was watching the tonight show years ago. Johnny had a guest on there that was wanting to learn sign language and spent a day in a school for the deaf. He said he spent some time in their office then the school master introduced him to one of the students and had assigned the student the task of showing this man around the school that lasted one day. the student had showed this man how to say "Hi, my name is XXXXX" . The student wanted some fun that day so he showed him wrong. He went around all day signing "HI, I'm Stupid".

| I have to say that your daughter should be commended for even thinking about doing something this noble. I might add that there are many avenues a degree in ASL (American Sign Language) could take her. Starting young will give her a heads up because it's much harder to become proficient at it than you would think. The colleges that offer degrees are few and far between, but many community colleges or universities should have the beginner classes available. Best of luck to her! |

| Thank you all for responding. My daughter knows sign langauge pretty well... she taught herself some and then met a deaf friend... We took a college class last winter She was only a JR. in high school but she was allowed to take the class at night. I took it with her because I realized how hard it is to comunicate when you are with a deaf friend. I went to dinner with Aubrey and her friend and tried to talk to her but it was very hard. I now realize how cut off from others the deaf are and so we took a class together. Aubrey was the youngest (17) in the class and also the very best in the class... She now also is taking her second class with it and is doing very well. But she wants to do it for life...She doesn't want to go to far away from home to college the first year so we are looking around MA first... We go shopping and we don't speak to each other only sign... We have fun. She has meet deaf poeple and they are thrilled to talk with her! And her friend will sometimes sleep over and I can talk to her a little... I struggle but the two girls are so funny... their hands are flying around and they are laughing and having a great time... it is heart warming.

| My son-in-law joined an ASL group and is learning. Some community colleges offer classes and there are web sites that offer certification as well. But that is about the extent of my knowledge......small and insignificant as it is. |
