![]() Sometimes young 1st time mothers get a bit overzealous with the cleaning and the cord. Hopefully that's what it is and things are moving along there ok now.

![]() Don't worry everyone, I just did a quick search of the internet and there was nothing about dogs "eating their young". They talked about rabbits doing it sometimes because they don' have the instinct like dogs or cats who protect their young. I am sure Heather has talked to her vet or her mentor and she is just too busy with the whelping to get back to the computer. Let's assume the best at this point otherwise I on't be able to sleep. ![]()

![]() No but she is probably very busy, or maybe someone had her number already. She is off line now so all must be being taken care of. ![]() Last edited by CC's; 05-04-2005 at 10:16 PM.

| ![]() Angel has calmed down a little but we had to seperate her from the first puppy. The animal hospital said to leave her alone and let nature take its course for now. I dont think she was eating the afterbirth. she was biting down hard and trying to carry the pup away. keep praying everyone ![]()

![]() Has your mommy had any more pups? Good luck! I will be thinking about you and your yorkies and will definatly say lots of prayers for you.. I hope all goes smoothly from here on. Can you take them into the vet tonight if needed? Do you have a little bottle to feed the 1st baby if the mom still isnt accepting her?

![]() Sounds like she is wanting to move the pup to where she is comfortable whelping. It doesn't sound like she's wanting to hurt the pup, just hide it. If your whelping box is open a bit of cover on the top sometimes helps if they are nervous about having things or people around. I have one that if I don't pen her in a x-pen in her box she will carry the pups to my bed when I'm not looking. LOL It will be ok, remember to breathe........... ![]()

| ![]() She was trying to dig into him even after she chewed through the cord. I had to stop her. Should I put her under the tanning bed with her (where's she's hiding) until the next puppy comes? She doesn't seem to be contracting and it's been an hour and 40 minutes since this one was born. Im not sure how long to wait on her contractions before something may be wrong. Any help you have PLEASE send my way...

![]() Do you have a breeder's phone number? Someone on here, or a breeder you talked to from YTCA? It sounds like you need some experienced breeder advice who will just stay on the phone with you until it's over.

![]() I am not a breeder so I am hesitant to give advice but I will anyway... I had a golden retriever years ago and I was with her while she gave birth. I made a bed for her in my closet so she would have her own privacy, after each baby would come out she would grab it with her teeth, clean it up and chew the cord off, then she would place then near her chest so they can eat. IF I was you I would put the mother somewhere she will feel privacy, but make sure its a place you will be able to get in there and reach her if needed. And I would put the baby by her chest to see if she will let him eat, its worth a try, if she attacks it then you'll know its not the thing to do, but if she lets him eat and she licks him, she is probably just doing what her insticts tell her to do. Maybe you can place the puppy to eat and pet her at the same time trying to comfort her? Be calm, gently talk to the mother and tell her everything is ok, I bet you being calm will help her alot right now. GOOD LUCK!! Were all standing by thinking of you and sending you our prayers.

![]() If she is resting and not pushing or looks in distress she should be fine for now. The pup nursing would help the contractions along. If she is hiding under a tanning bed you won't have good access to her if your needed. If you don't have a way to cover the whelping box and keep her in that area, maybe a closet would work. You may want let the pup to her so it can nurse and she can clean it with your supervision. Speak calmly to her, its her first time. You can remove the pup if she gets to rough or starts whelping another pup. Make sure the pup is kept warm. Never hesitate to call your vet and ask for their suggestions and help. I wish I could be of more help but its hard to do via message board. ![]()

I tried putting the puppy back with her but she keeps dragging it wherever she goes. At one point she tried to suffocate him. He got really cold because she wouldnt stay on the heating pad. I just put her box in the closet and she's in there with the lights off. She's scratching at the door though trying to get out. I just don't know what to do. I called the animal hospital yet again and told them its been almost 2 1/2 hours since she had the first pup and she is not even contracting. They said not to worry nless she seems to be in pain or has been pushing for long periods of time without another puppy appearing. Ugh I am so confused. When all is said and done, Angel and Prince are BOTH getting fixed. End of story!
