Any suggestions?????? I picked up my new baby on 4/22. Breeder was feeding her blackwood (never heard of). I started mixing her food with Natural balance. Gave her a bath with Vellus on 4/23. She went to the vet on 4/25 to get her wellness check and 2nd set of shots. On 4/26 she started itching. I took her to the vet on 4/27 for the itching. They put her on adult benedryl 1/4 tablet every twelve hours. On 4/28 I gave her a quarter tablet at 2:30 in the afternoon. It didn't help much so I called the vet back and spoke with her.I also told her she acted a little strange on it. She said give her 1/2 tablet so I gave her that at 9:30 pm. She had an adverse reaction to the medicine. We were up all night her eyes were bugged and she was paranoid. We could not take our hands off her or she would scream. I tried to reach the vet back to no avail. I called the next morning and she said bring her in. I took her in and she said I gave this dog too much medicine. I am so sorry. Bella is 9 weeks old and 2.6 pds. She didn't charge me and gave me the name of some other medicines. I have changed her food to premium lamb and rice. She really doesn't like it but I mix lamb and rice puppy champions in it to get her to eat it. She is still itching. To the point that she wines when she is scratching. I am scared to give her more medicine. I wipe her off when she comes in from outside ( the pollen is bad her). She has been on her new food for 5 days and I used the same Vellus Shampoo. Where should I start to figure out what is making her itch. Obviously it is not her food. Maybe the shampoo. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

OMG! You must have been scared to death. That is so hard to take when you try to do right for your baby and it only gets worse. Is your vet experienced with toy breeds and their special and unique needs? I would suggest you ask the vet for feeding suggestions..one thing you can do is start a diet of venison or duck and rice. Add other foods as you go along but this plan needs to be supervised by your vet or a very experienced breeder/owner of Yorkies. Our beloved breed is so unique and reacts so differently. I would also rinse the baby really well and maybe bathe again but use hypoallergenic products..

The vet wanted me to put her on Science Diet. She turned up her nose and walked away. I really don't want her on it anyway. This food is natural. We have a dog bakery here and she said this works well with dogs with allergies. But I think first I will try a shampoo for sensitive skin. I tried yesterday just rinsing her off to see if that helped but it didn't so I will go get some stuff today.

well i know for sure that Missing Link is a great supplement for Itching. Well that's what I used for Oreo who would itch till he bled himself. I mixed Missing Link and put him on Innova and it worked like a charm. www.naturapet.com you might want to try missing link, i hope your baby is okay and that the itchies go away, i know it can be miserable both for the pup and the owner but i wish you the best!

I would change vets since she instructed you to give the 1/2 tablet in the first place. 25mg of Benadryl for a puppy. No wonder she was bugged eyed. The normal dose is about 1-2mg per pound. 25mg is enough for a 50 pound dog. I would also bath her with a mild shampoo and make sure you rinse her well. You could even add a bit of vinegar to a final rinse water. Also I would put her on a single protein/carb food. Lamb and rice, potato and fish, something like that. I would steer clear of any food with corn for now. Good luck.

| Be careful not to wash her too much. I found that too many baths REALLY dried Tucker's skin out & made him really itchy. I had to let him get kind of dirty (and smelly!) but it was worth it to make sure that he wasn't itchy & uncomfortable...

| I agree with the above posts. I'm so sorry for what you have been through with your baby. I have a Schnauzer with extremely itchy skin. I've dealt with this issue for about 5 years now. He is always worse in the summer. He is on Flint River Ranch white fish and potato diet. I get it through their web site. It has made a huge difference in his skin. I wash him with Dove bar soap, unscented. No sprays or perfumes. And after a bath I rinse rinse rinse and rinse again. In answer to your question, well, there is no one answer for every dog. A lot of it is trial and error. You've gotta be a dectective and sort out what is upsetting her system and what's OK. I've tried a lot of sensitive skin pet products and not one worked for us. Hopefully your baby is not such an extreme case. Be careful changing food and do it gradually. But I think I would quit using that shampoo first. That may be the whole problem. Good luck.

Yorkie girl's advice helped Sami's itching problem. Thank You Yorkie girl Sami has been eating royal canine and I couldn't find the original food (innova) she had recommended, petco did not have it but they recommended natural choice that had the same ingredients? chicken meal rice & oatmeal, Yorkie girl also told me also about missing link!! that I did buy and I added a 1/2 teaspoon to his food(uncertain about how much) for two days no itching!!! Thanks again!!

I am still learning what the best foods are for the breed but I do think that I am quite intelligent when it comes to dog foods. I have researched many different dog foods since my old dog was allergic to almost everything under the sun and my memphis is very picky. Anyway, my point here is even though science diet is promoted to be a good food it isn't the greatest and in my opinion you get what you pay for with most dog foods, the cheaper it is the crappier it is. I also believe that the more natural you can go the better since all the different additives and stuff aren't the greatest.

Recons, have you found that these brats will kill for that crappy food and turn their noses up at the good, premium stuff? Honestly, I think mine would be as big as the side of the house if I fed them Pedigree or something similar..I do use it as treats though instaed of buying a lot of treats..
