| About that time! Yes! Gracie will be 6 months this week so i know it is time to make appointments for her to be spayed! I am so nervous and worried about it! Should i wait longer since she is only 2.7 lbs? I dont want her to have her first heat before but also dont want to put her at a bigger risk b/c she is small! Has anyone else had a yorkie around 3 lbs spayed? Any advice or info i need to know??? All advice is much needed and appreciated! Thanks ... Worried Mom!

| aawww sorry I can't help you but I can understand why you are worried. She is a Tiny little girl. I did see a lady at Petsmart this past weekend that had a 4 yr old yorkie and she was 3 lbs. She was really tiny...but she mentioned that she was spayed. |

| Sissy was 3 lbs 7 oz and 7 months old when she was spayed. She did just fine. I think it is important to have a really good, positive feel for your vet. Make sure they do pre-op blood work to check everything out and know what type of anesthesia will be used. Ask whether your baby will stay overnight (and if so is there someone there 24 hrs) or come home later that day. Pain medication for the first few days is also a good idea. Find out how the incision will be closed. If there are any extra baby teeth, have them pulled while already under anesthesia. Also microchip and/or tatoo at this time if not already done. Know that you will worry before, during and after and it is much less stressful for our babies than it is for us!! That's everything I can think of right now.

| Since your little one is so small you can wait until she is a but older just in case she will need some teeth pull. That way she wont need to do under twice. Talk to your vet, and make sure uses usoflarine (sp?). Gucci was 1 yr old and she weight almost 5 lbs when she got spayed and she didnt had any problems. |

| If she isn't at any risk of getting pregnant I can't imagine there is much harm in waiting another few months to see if she adds on any weight. Also, as mentioned above, you will have a better idea of if she needs any mouth work done. I know my vet was very honest with me and said he finds operating on small dogs very nerve racking just because of the risks involved. My dog is male, but I've personally decided to wait until he's a year old (he's a 4lb dog) so I can be sure his teeth are settled and he is pretty much full sized (he's currently at 8 months) to ensure he is physically at his best before having an operation. |

| I am starting to worry too about Shylah. She is almost 6 months and weighs around 3.2 lbs. I am thinking about waiting until after Christmas and she'll be at least 9 months old. How old are they when they go through their first heat? I worry about what Starsky and Haggis will do to her when she is in heat. They are both fixed, but can't they still hurt her?

| I'm getting Piper spayed Friday. She weighs 6.3 at 6 months. Wow! you have a tiny one. I have read that sometimes that small never have a menstral cycle. So you might be able to wait. |

| I am also concerned. Abbey will be 6 months old Oct. 13. She currently weighs right at 3 pounds. My concern is not only her age and weight, but I have read that in order to lessen the risk of cancer, the spaying must be done before the first heat. I have also read to expect the first heat anytime after 5-6 months no matter what the weight. A friend of mine had a 4 pound puppy that had her first heat at 6 1/2 months. She had been scheduled for her spay the following week. That turned out to be too late. So what is best for our little girls? Ellie |

| Very interesting. Riley is 6 months old now & 3lb 2oz. I really wanted to have her spayed soon but since she just had knee operation I was told that it's best to wait awhile. She also hasn't cut any adult teeth yet. She goes for a checkup in 3 weeks so I'll she how soon we can get it done. |
