Sometimes I wish I could un-velcro Pepper too.LOL. He's trying to get my attention most of the time, unless he's sleeping, chewing on his toys or getting into some mischief . He brings his toys and puts them next to my feet and I, silly, fall every time and throw them for him. He follows me to toilet too, but mostly to snatch something from the dirty clothes hamper... But he sometimes goes to another room with his toy and plays there, and I always try to encourage it!!

Default it just takes time

I was a little disappointed when my puppy didn't care whether I was in the room or not when I first brought her home.

Just like you don't expect people, adopted children, etc, to be attached to you right away, you shouldn't expect that in a dog.

What reassured me was when I read the AKC handbook for puppies that they sent out when I registered my dog. It said that usually around 5 or 6 months the dog really bonds to you and looks to you for security. And whatdayaknow? Around 5 months, my dog will not let me out of her sight. Everywhere I am, she comes and sits right in front of me, looking quite regal and proper. I like to think she's protecting me from any possible intruders, but really I think she's just afraid I'm going to leave without her.

It just takes time, every dog is different.

That's one problem I haven't had yet. Muffin followed me everywhere. She was always sure to follow. Kacee has been the same way from day one. We have a saying at my house. Everywhere that Karen goes, Kacee's sure to follow. You know, like the nursery rhyme. We're all crazy here. The poor little thing has been glued to my shoes from day one. She was lucky a few times, because she nearly became a yorkie football projectile from that habit. Even after we brought her home and she was in the gated area with someone else, if I would go to another room, she'd start crying.

Logan was very independent as a pup, he didn't wanna be loved on & could care less what you were doing. However as he aged he became much more loving. I noticed a big difference when he turned a year. Give it a little time. If he's housebroken I would suggest removing the leash & seeing how he behaves.

Melvin is very independent, he loves to be in the house with us to just be close. And while he's in the house he would prefer to be looking for trouble, he's always so shocked when he gets in trouble and sent out. Marilynn is always right there, thisclose to me. She is close to Shane as well, but knows I'm the one who feeds and bathes her. I think it has something to do with he (Melvin) isn't fixed and feels the need to protect and be a "man".

Animal Smiley 036 I agree with all of you!

Artie seems to be more Independent, but he is still clingy by sitting on the desk while I am on here yalking away.......and Abigail is on my lap or on my feet if she isn't Nursing her Puppies, she is just too sweet and lovable. They both are always on Guard or following me around, just in case I do leave?
I am at a loss as to what to tell my Sister? She bought him from a Pet Store, but I don't think that has anything to do with it?
She does have 3 daughters so I think Cookie just doesn't want to make the effort to compete for her attention? Or by leashing him it's making him do the opposite? I don't think she is really a "Dog Person", b/c he was purchased as an "Accessory" to go into her purse. Which he doesn't like that either!
He is also crate trained when she leaves the House or to Sleep in @ night and he is fully House broken and goes outside for regular daily exercise.
He is also Nuetered, he seems quite Normal to me? But that seems to be her only Complaint.

It seems to me, if someone really wasn't in love with their dog, their dog might not be in love with them. Maybe he knows that she isn't really a "dog person"? Dogs can sense a lot, they aren't dumb. My kids are in love with Shane and I, because we have spoiled them more than they needed! They have their own toybox, wardrobe, they go everywhere with us. They are our children, untill the real thing happens (if, big if).

Marilynn wasn't crazy about ridding in a purse either, she got used to it, and now she loves it! If she see's us start to get ready to leave, she jumps in her bag. You have to want them there with you for the right reasons, because you want them to be there. Not because, everyone elses dog does it.

From the first day Sean came to live with us (a rescue adopted at the end of February) he wanted to be with me ALL the time. He would cry and bark when I left his sight. Now he's okay if he's with my husband. A week after he came, I kept leaving the room to let him know I'd be back.

He's funny, though, as others have said when he has to know where I am. When I go into the bathroom he looks to see where I am, happy that I'm not far away. His real reason for looking, I think, is so he can jump up on my chair, his favorite. Funny guy! As soon as I return he looks at me, realizing he must get off, so he gets up and actually follows my direction for him to get off so I can sit down.

My first Yorkie came to live with me when he was older. (He had been with my parents.) He was always by my side when I was home.

My other two had each other for most of their lives so they weren't as dependent about being with me.

As said by others, depends on the dog. Most important is the love that we show them. Sean and I became VERY CLOSE from the beginning.

I've had Adonis for 5 years now. If I go into the bathroom, he's in there with me in no time flat, sitting on the rug, waiting on me.

Now, my new yorkie Venus, and I are in the "bonding" stage. When I watch tv, she's in my lap. Takes her a few minutes to calm down, but she does, and falls asleep on my lap. Watching TV, is one of our "quality times" lol. She's still quite young, 13 weeks old, and I know the bonding doesn't happen overnight.

I feel before the year is out, will have 2 of them in the bathroom waiting on me to get out of the shower!

Well speaking with the whole of my experience..ok..3 months. I dont think you can make any dog or person feel anything that they are just not going to feel..Mine follows every move I make..I cant sneak out of a room IF I wanted to. And that includes trying to go to the bathroom. He is THERE!!
