Embarassed Is Your Yorkie "socialized"???

Last week I met a Neighbor, while I was out walking my 2. She yelled from across the Street, "Are those Yorkie's? I have 2 girls bring them over".
I ended up hanging out and doing YT. in person, she showed me pictures, their outfits, their "Canopy Beds" and she shared all her Yorkie Stuff.
But the whole time my 2 sat calmly, waiting for our Yorkie Session to be over as they were sighing with Boredom!
Her 2 were locked in the House, as we sat outside enjoying the beautiful weather.......they were growling, barking non-stop and attacking each other, acting hysterical. After an hour of this, I finally asked her why they were like that? She replied they are 2 yrs. old and have never gone for a "Walk" or been around any other Dogs, especially other Yorkie's! They are paper trained so they are never taken outside her House, except to go to the VET.
They can go around other people but they are all over the place/spastic, like they are going to have a "Heart Attack" any second! She said they are always like that and she thought all Yorkie's are like that?
I thought to myself "How can she live like that on a Daily Basis"?
I am curious to know is your Yorkie or Yorkie's "SOCIALIZED" with other people, Dogs, or other Animals?

Default hmmm

i always *thought* snickers was socialized until recently
she does "ok" in puppy class and good with the kids and she goes nuts when ppl come over but calms down w/in 15min (i attribute that to still being a puppy i hope!) but when we brought boomer and karma in it was a WHOLE OTHER STORY ( for those who don't know the story they are (2) 2yr old yorkies we just adopted)
she went nuts and they all have been trying to attack each other
i am really hoping it was more of a territorial thing that can be corrected than anything else...

I hate to say this, but that sounds cruel and inhumane to me, to keep a dog locked up inside all of the time and to never let it go for a walk or be around other people. I know the intent was not to judge, but to ask about our own socialization efforts. Gracie is only 3 mo. old, but I take her to a park (where people and dogs congregate) most every day. She loves everyone and everything. The only time she barks or growls is when we are playing. Would you call that socialized? I think we have a good start anyway.

My pup's met a lot of people... I can't take him out to meet other dogs till after coming Sat when he gets his last shot (finally ). I take him a lot of places in the carrier, he's met a lot of people and loves it! Hubby and I took him bike riding last weekend (in a basket) and he liked it too. He loves kids as well. But I want him to meet other dogs and interact with them in the right way as well, it's very important for those guys.. once in a vet's office there was a lady with a girl Yorkie, a couple years old, terrified of other dogs (even my baby boy), as I found out she's been kept inside the apartment the whole life and never really met other dogs. But that's sad

Mine love to be around people and other animals. I must say that they do go crazy when someone comes in the door...not crazy because they want to bite but excited and want all the attention. They do that when I get home from work and it breaks my heart because I ignore them. I will not sit and play with them until they calm down. After like 3 mins they finally calm down and then I give them lots of hugs and kisses and even talk to them.

Hey hun, yeah I bet it is just a territorial thing. This is so new for all of you. How are you doing anyways? Is Snickers happy or jealous? Let us know will you. Always thinking of you and what a wonderful thing you did for these two babies, and to get your Snickers two new friends!
Getting back to the subject though.....Yeah I think it is really strange and wrong that that woman doesnt take her dogs out. Maybe you could talk her into getting them socialized, maybe with puppy classes or something and then yours will have a couple of nice little friends to play with. That would be great I bet! I wish someone near me had some Yorkies.

Default My fear...

My baby is coming home the first week of October and one (yeah, I got more than one...LOL) of my biggest fears is it will be hyper. When I announced to my hubby I wanted a yorkie, that was the very first thing he said...they are yappy and snappy. My breeder says the mom and dad are calm in nature, but kid like, I'm sure Jasper will do everything and anything allowed. So, I read like crazy..books, e-site, and of course YT. Any ideas on how to prevent this type action is certainly a benefit for me.

How proud you must be of your littles ones...they really showed those house kids a thing or two. Good for you!!!!!

Wow! I couldn't imagine not ever letting a puppy outside. Stump is pee pad trained and he still goes on walks, and always goes "bye byes" in the car. I thought he was well scoialized, but a little anxious around other dogs. But when we went on vacation he stayed at the Pet Resort and his report cards from Doggy Camp said he was shy around the other dogs, but spent his whole time cuddling with the Counselors. Lol.. I just think he was being the attention whore.

Brutus LOVES people and kids but he's never around other dogs so I don't think he's socialized that way. One of my neighbors has a 150lb mastiff and when Brutus see her he huffs, puffs, growls and barks nonstop. The poor mastiff just looks at him and runs away with her tail between her legs!

The strangest part of the story is that she yelled for you to go over and yet never really introduced you to her dogs. On the bright side she does have 2 yorkies so at least they have each other. She seems like she loves her dogs with all the things she has for them but just a bit ignorant when it comes to having them socialized.

As for Zoe, he LOVES people. He is friendlier to visitors than he is to me. He is picky with animals though. Since he is such a passive/submissive dog, he is only open to play with certain other dogs. He has a best friend and thats it. Zoe is always around people but has a playdate twice a month with ralphie.

Adonis (my 5 year old) is a very social dog. He loves it when company comes! He thinks everyone is coming to see him.

I've also taken him to my sisters quite frequently, who has 3 female dogs, all spayed. He really loves one, thinks she's his best friend.

I haven't seen any dogs, or people that he won't run right up to. Except he's not good with babies. I've watched him try to nip at diapers when they run, so when babies are around, he gets put up.

All I have to do is say "wanna go with mama" and he goes wild till I open the front door, then the car door. He hops right in his little car seat!

I've also taken him to Austin TX (from Mobile AL), so he loves to travel too. Got along really good with my friends cats out there. But when we go to Mom's, he stays on the back of the sofa, when the rockwiller is in the house.

I've only had Venus (12 weeks old) a few weeks. But she loves to chase Adonis. I haven't taken her to my sisters yet, cause she's so small, and really have to watch her close. When she gets a little older, and minds better, she'll get to go down there too. I suppose that will be 2 doggie car seats in my car, lol.

Chachi and Jewels have been around alot of people and dogs. I also take them on walks but they still go crazy when someone comes too the door so i would say they are not socialized well

Those dogs must be agressive because they're bored out of their minds. I would be if I'd never leave the house. They got to see and experience new things!!!

Trixie can be a little yappy when she hasn't seen dogs for a while. We try to take her to the dog park every week and then she's all play, no bark. She loves running around with other dogs. And even though she doesn't like to be petted by most people, she loves to get the attention. She only lets the special people pet and hold her!!!

Cali is very shy around people. She loves Maya and bosses her around but around other dogs and people she will not go up to them and is very leary. She has always been around people and still prefers to stay away or by me. I have had a couple of playdates with a fellow YT and Cali is not playful just wants to be by me. I am going to keep working withh her. I walk them everryday that it is nice and take her in the car.
