| Yes - I know how you feel. I couldn't find a "nice apartment" in California because I had one cat. My sister is here and her son-in-law has about 30 rentals. She said he sure hates to rent to people with pets. Occasionally, he gives in and does, but she said he is almost always sorry that he did. And - it isn't always the size of the pet. Small dog's pee can ruin a carpet too -- right? And, it's the smaller breeds that do most of the barking and bother the neighbors. And there's other damage too -- how many of us have posted here on YT totally upset about something our little Yorkie ruined.... carpet, and even drywall! So - there are definitely two sides. I think this is why so often - so many of us try and encourage younger people to wait until they are more settled before they get a dog. And, sometimes "settled" means getting into your first home......sorry about that! PS: My sister said that more often than not - damage deposits don't even begin to cover some of the damage that some of the pets have done to her son-in-law's rentals......carpets aren't cheap! And this guy loves animals. He lives in a nice home and has two children, two dogs, and other pets as well. Carol Jean |

| My boyfriend and I just recently found an apartment after months of searching. We have two yorkies and no one wanted to rent to us either. Sometimes a place would say "pets negotiable" but we found that that basically meant that if there was a choice between us "with 2 dogs" and another applicant with out, then the place always went to the other people. The only advice that I can give is even if a place says they don't allow pets, ask anyway. Yorkies are so small that they may make an exception. Also, the realtor that we worked with suggested that we create "pet resumes" to show the renter. Make sure to attach a picture to show how small your yorkie really is. Also, you might say that you are willing to leave a higher deposit for your dog. The place we found allows us to have our dogs, but only with a $1,000 deposit and when we leave we have to get the carpets professionally cleaned and also get the place fumigated (sp?) for fleas (even though our dogs don't have them). The deposit was difficult for us to scrape up, but we were willing to do anything. Whatever you do, don't give up. We're wishing you good luck! |
