Yes - I know how you feel. I couldn't find a "nice apartment" in California because I had one cat.
My sister is here and her son-in-law has about 30 rentals. She said he sure hates to rent to people with pets. Occasionally, he gives in and does, but she said he is almost always sorry that he did.
And - it isn't always the size of the pet. Small dog's pee can ruin a carpet too -- right? And, it's the smaller breeds that do most of the barking and bother the neighbors.
And there's other damage too -- how many of us have posted here on YT totally upset about something our little Yorkie ruined.... carpet, and even drywall!
So - there are definitely two sides. I think this is why so often - so many of us try and encourage younger people to wait until they are more settled before they get a dog. And, sometimes "settled" means getting into your first home......sorry about that!
PS: My sister said that more often than not - damage deposits don't even begin to cover some of the damage that some of the pets have done to her son-in-law's rentals......carpets aren't cheap! And this guy loves animals. He lives in a nice home and has two children, two dogs, and other pets as well.
