Help, I think that my baby is pregnant!!!! I have a 7 1/2 month old female whom I think is possibly pregnant. She has been in heat since approximately August 3rd. She has just stopped spotting. We have a 5 1/2 month old male yorkie/shih tzu mix that I'm thinking might have gotten the "jump" on her. I've never had a female who wasn't fixed and we were planning to breed her next year. I've noticed over the last few days that her tits are becoming slightly enlarged and swollen. Is this something that normally occurs with her heat or is she pregnant? If she is pregnant, what can I expect and is this a dangerous age for her to have babies? Please reply ASAP thanks. Kim V.

| Sunnie's heat usually lasts around 21 days. So if she started on the 3rd she's probably done. Sunnie's teats swell slightly at the end of her heat cycle. When she's bred she doesn't have much swelling until the week or so before the pups are due. Ask your vet if you're concerned but they might not be able to tell until 5 wks or so. When she's in heat we go into "Lock Down" mode around here. We have a crate for Sunnie and one for Rocky. They take turns with "free" time. Good Luck!

Hopefully it will just be the end of her heat cycle. I dont mean to be rude, but how are you unsure if your girl is pregnant? your male should be kept totally away from her when she is in heat, and then you would no that there is no way she is pregnant. 7 1/2 months is FAR too young, so please take necessary precautions next time! Anyway i hope all works out well

I agree -- it is unfortunate that there are so many "accidental pregnancies" with these little dogs. Keeping a dog from getting pregnant isn't really an impossible task. I know it takes a little planning, work, and survelliance - but sometimes this is a very important thing to do -- especially when you are dealing with a little female that is still only a puppy herself. I hope your little girl isn't pregnant. Good luck - Carol Jean

Hopefully, she isn't pregnant this young, but a 5 1/2 month old male is capable of producing puppies (but even if they are AKC they won't be eligible for registration due to both of their ages). If I was going to make a bet. I would bet she wasn't pregnant since most "studs" that young don't know what to do, but he could have gotten lucky. Swelling is normal during the heat cycle and she could even be having a false pregnancy. Your vet should be able to tell by feeling around 28 days pregnant. A pregnancy at this age would be risky and she might not take care of the pups even if all goes well to that point. You might want to consider having her spayed immediately. I know my vet will perform a spay during pregnancy in a situation like this.

my baby was 9 months old when I took her to the breeders to be boarded while I went away to work. While she was there, she went into heat for the first time. Apparently dogs can get pregnant in their first heat as she came home expecting. I was so worried for her and so scared. She was very young as well as tiny, 4 lbs prepreg. Anyhow, she had 4 puppies in June. 3 survived and she was an awesome mom. I know I was lucky and I was so scared and worried for everyone. I just wanted to let you know that although it is not what anyone wants, sometimes it does work out well. We have 3 healthy puppies to prove it and mom is finally back to her old self.
